Yn's POV

I woke up a minute or two before the alarm was supposed to go off, which was one of my favorite times of the day. I turned around to face Jay, who had one of his arms draped over me, and smiled. His hair was tousled from sleeping, and he was snoring softly. That's when Jay's eyes opened, revealing his beautiful blue orbs, and he caught my gaze.

"Good morning," he mumbled sleepily.

"Morning," I reply and reach up to run my hand through his hair. Jay grabbed my hand and moved it, giving him the space he needed to lean forward and kiss me. Usually, I hated kissing in the morning because of obvious reasons, such as I hadn't been able to brush my teeth yet. But today, I didn't mind. As we were kissing, the alarm clock started beeping, and Jay groaned against my lips.

"I don't want to go to work," Jay said.

"Yeah, well, we have to. I'm going to take a shower. You're more than welcome to join me," I tell him.

"I mean, if you're offering, how can I decline?" Jay questioned and got out of bed, heading towards the shower.

"Hey, the New Deputy Supe is giving a speech," Kim informed Adam and Kevin as they entered the bullpen.

"You mean apology. She's pretty much telling us we're a bunch of unenlightened idiots," Hailey noted.

"I wouldn't go that far. She's just telling us what we already know. Police have to do a better job
at deescalating," Jay spoke.

"Sure, but she doesn't have to be so disrespectful. We're all trying our best," Hailey said.

"Not good enough, Hailey. CPD did not kill George Floyd, I get that, but we sure as hell killed Shawn Paige. So maybe we should just reserve our judgement, listen to what the sister has to say," Kevin stated.

"Yeah, I'm not..." Hailey then trailed off, unsure of what to say next.

..................................

"Okay, what do we know?" Voight asked.

"Not much. Jay and I heard the 'shots fired' call come over the radio, so we rushed to the scene. The little girl was bleeding out when we got here," Hailey answered.

"She got shot in the stomach. The good news is, the ambo got here quick," Jay added.

"What happened? Robbery, drive-by?" Kim questioned.

"Yeah, we don't know. She was walking with her parents, and then she got shot somehow. Unfortunately, they didn't see much. They heard two loud pops. Next thing you know, their daughter's on the ground bleeding," Jay explained.

"So stray bullet," Adam suggested.

"All right, start canvassing. Talk to witnesses, pull PODs, surveillance cameras. Find someone who saw something," Voight said. We all split up, Jay, Hailey and I going one way while Kim, Adam and Kevin went the other way.

"I hope Kev didn't think that I..." Hailey stopped herself for a second. "I was bitching about the Deputy Supe's speech, not trying to minimize what happened to Shawn Paige."

"I think he totally knows that. He's just venting. He's going through so much right now. I wouldn't worry about it," I tell her.

"Sir, do you live around here?" Jay asked a younger, black man, who nodded. "Did you see anything unusual? Anybody with a gun, anyone arguing?"

"No," the man responded.

"Did you hear gunshots?" Hailey questioned.

"No," the man replied again.

"How long you been out here?" I ask.

"About an hour," the man answered.

I sighed. "So you've been out here for an hour, yet you didn't hear two gunshots that hit a little girl right over there 30 minutes ago?"

"I already told you. I didn't hear anything," the man shared.

"Look, we're just trying to get some information," Jay began.

"And I ain't got any, so get the hell out my face, bitch," the man spoke. I could see the muscles in Jay's jaw clench, meaning this could get way out of hand.

"What did you say to me?" Jay asked and took a step closer to the man.

"Come on," I say to Jay and slip my hand into his, giving it a soft squeeze.

"Yeah, y'all racist-ass cops ain't welcome around here no more," the man stated as we walked away. Jay stopped for a second, and was ready to say something, but instead he just shook his head and continued walking. Back at district, we kept digging, but we weren't getting much.
