Yn's POV

"Ln, I didn't expect to see you make an appearance today" Platt spoke as I walked into the lobby.

"Believe me, Sarge, neither did I" I say and head over to the stairs.

When I got to the top of the stairs, I took off my hat and stuffed it in my pocket, not even paying attention to what was going on in the room. However, when I looked up, basically everyone was staring at me.

"Nice to see you Ln," Voight announced.

"Sarge, I'm so sorry I'm late. I had to drop Chief off at the vet, and then my car broke down on the way over here. It took hours for the tow truck to arrive, and then I had to call a cab" I explain.

"You caught up on the case" Voight asked.

"Yep. Everything from Lamar Garrison to Sean Alter. Jay's been sending me updates" I answer.

That's when I caught sight of a man standing by our white board. I had met him a few times before, and lets just say we didn't get along. Our relationship was rocky, and I thought that once I moved up to Intelligence, I would never have to see his face again.

"What the hell is he doing here" I ask and point to the detective.

"You know Detective Staples" Jay questioned.

"You mean Detective Asshat? Yeah, I know him" I say. "How many people's asses did you have to kiss to get to tag along with Intelligence, Paul?"

Paul groaned. "Of course this is your unit. Out of all of the units in the city, I had to be assigned to the one you work in."

"Okay. What's going on here" Hailey asked.

"I knew Detective Staples back when I was in Homicide. His unit took more of the cases on the Northside while mine took the South. If we had a case in the middle, our units would work together to solve them" I inform everyone.

"So what's with the beef" Adam questioned.

"Paul would always take the information I had gathered and passed it off as his own. And he always took the credit for the cases I solved" I tell everyone.

"All right, well, for now, this beef has to stop. We've got a case to solve. Paul, go on ahead" Voight said.

"I went and shook the bushes like you asked. No one's talking. So I went to wholesale. I've got a CI in distro. Lamar Garrison's been making some really big moves. He had the feelers out, he was trying to expand into fentanyl, carfentanil," Paul explained.

"I'm going to cut you off" Kevin interrupted. "Break down how that connects to Brooks."

"Garrison was doing it all on the sly. Brooks didn't know about it. Garrison told my guys Brooks couldn't know about it. Garrison was moving the corporation in a way that Brooks did not want to go. That's only going to end one way. One winner, one loser" Paul clarified.

"It explains why Garrison went through so many hoops to get it done. It was a power play, and at the end of it, he needed the loyalty of his troops. He had to use an outsider" Kim continued.

"Well, our best move is to find Alter and get him to flip on Garrison" Voight said.

"Sarge, we think we got him. Pings put him in Lawndale. His family owned a bar there. It closed down three years ago" Hailey spoke.

"Alter and Garrison had been in constant contact since before the shooting. Alter's been staying at this bar the last couple days, and the most recent ping is two hours ago" Jay added.

"All right, so let's hit this place. Ln, I want you here searching for anything that can help us solve this case. The rest of you, suit up," Voight said.

Alter was dead, meaning someone, most likely Lamar Garrison, had shot him. Our new plan was to get Frank Rochester, one of the older gang members in the neighborhood, to go undercover for us, set up a deal with Lamar, and get him to confess to both the murder of Alter and Brooks. He agreed, and now all of us were set up around the church to make sure the deal went down correctly. Lucky me, I got to sit in a car with Paul. Thankfully, Adam was also there.

"I'm ready for this to be done" Paul complained.

"It'll be done when we make an arrest, and not before" Adam told him.

"You guys think I beefed on Voight because he big-footed me on a case. If I was some dog cop, I would've disappeared. I would've walked away. I'm fighting to work this" Paul exclaimed.

"Listen, Paul. The way we do things in Intelligence are way different than Homicide. And whether you like it or not, this is not your unit, so you don't get to decide how we play things. Just shut up and wait for orders" I say and lean back in my seat.

"You have changed, Ln. The Detective Ln I knew never talked back to anyone. Hell, she would barely speak up to talk to her own unit" Paul spoke.

"Its been years since you last saw me, Staples" I point out. "People change. You've just got to get used to it. You can't be an asshole your whole life."

"You know what, screw you, and screw this," Paul muttered and jumped out of the van.

"Shit. Voight, Staples is going in" I say over the radio.

"All right. Move in" Voight shouted.

Paul going in early sucked, but we managed to get Lamar. The bad news was that Frank had sustained some major head injuries, and he was on his way to the hospital to get checked out. Now, we were back at the district to close off the case.

"Ballistics just confirmed that the gun we found in Lamar Garrison's car is the gun that killed Sean Alter. That's the last piece" Jay said.

"Hey, let's finish that charging sheet and complaints. I'll get it over to the State's Attorney" Paul informed us.

"I'll call Willa's parents and tell them we got the guy" Kim added.

"Frank Rochester probably won't see tomorrow, you know" Voight told Paul. "His skull's cracked open, bleeding on the brain. All his ribs are broken."

"I did it right, Voight. I did it by the book" Paul declared.

"Not my book. I told you I had an unarmed officer and a CI inside that church. I gave you a direct order" Voight stated.

"I don't work for you" Paul countered.

Voight then lunged forward and punched Paul right in the face, making him fall to the ground. I laughed softly, covering my mouth with my hand. That was definitely the best thing to happen today. Once the case was officially closed, Jay dropped me off to pick up my car from the auto shop, and after that, I was able to get Chief from the vet. At the apartment, Jay was cooking dinner when I walked in.

"Something smells good" I say and unhook Chief's leash from his collar.

"Its just sausage, babe," Jay commented from his spot at the stove.

"Well" I mumble and walk over to him, wrapping my arms around his waist from behind. "It smells good nonetheless."

"So the whole thing between you and Paul" Jay brought up.

I sighed. "I'd prefer we not talk about it anymore. Its over. Now, hurry up on dinner. I'm starving."

"Sure thing, Yn" Jay said.
