Yn's POV
"Lucy Denton, the mom. Daughter's name is Shelby. Lucy knew somebody at the mayor's office, which is why you guys got called in, I guess" Adam's dad, Bob, said. "Does the husband live here" I ask. "Yeah, Wes Denton, husband and father. Don't know where he is, doesn't answer his phone, and there's an eight-year-old son, Jordan. Don't know where he is" Bob said. "Silva from homicide said they found casings from a Smith & Wesson, the same caliber registered to Wes Denton" Al said. "We found an open gun case open in the master closet. The gun was gone" Bob said.
"Motion detectors and window sensors. This is top-of-the-line security system. Do you know if the alarm was set" Kevin asked. "The technician tells me it is. So whoever entered had access to code, or they forced someone to enter it" Bob said. "Hey, did you get a ping on the father's phone or GPS" Voight asked. "I'm just the responding officer" Bob said. "So that's a no" Voight asked, causing Bob to nod.
I continued looking around the house, and I found something interesting in the laundry room. "Sarge, I've got something" I say. "What is it Ln" Voight asked and joined me. "We've got blood on the floor, and we've got this hand print. How old did they say the boy was" I ask. "Eight" Voight replied. "Patrol's got eyes on the dad's car" Antonio said and poked his head into the room. "All right, go tell everyone the boy is injured, so we've got to move" Voight said.
We ended up finding Wes, and we brought him back to the station. He claimed he didn't even know what happened to his wife and daughter until we told him. He also said he had no idea where the son was. So, we put patrol out to canvas the neighborhood for Jordan while we tried to figure out who could've killed the mom and daughter.
The next day, Adam's dad came back about an hour or two later and said there was a man watching the crime scene last night and today, so he got his name; Alexander Gage. Jay and I went down to his apartment to investigate, and when he didn't answer the door, Jay busted it down. "Alexander Gage, Chicago PD" I call out. No one answered, so we took a look around the apartment. "Clear" Jay said. "Same here. No one is here" I say and walked back into the main room. On one of the walls, there were tons of pictures of Lucy Denton, and there were also videos of her on a laptop sitting on the table. "This dude was obviously stalking her" I say. "Call the TAC team and get them to sit on this apartment" Jay said as we walked out of the apartment.
Just then, a man walked down the hallway, and he looked exactly like Gage. "Alexander Gage" Jay asked. Instead of answering, Gage took off, and we chased after him. We finally managed to catch him, and Jay sat him down so we could talk. "I didn't kill them" Gage said. "Well, you were stalking her, so you better explain yourself" I say. "Look, people think their words don't have any power, but hers did. She ruined me. I had a business. I had a family. I had workers. You know what they do to them, because they're all illegals? I do time and they get sent back to Mexico, all because she want to be Susie reporter for some paper nobody reads anymore" Gage said. "So you're going to follow her? You're going to wait for the perfect moment and make her pay" Jay asked. "The bitch was cheating on her husband, and I wanted to expose her" Gage said. "Lets take him back to the station" Jay said to me.
............................................
"The guy was definitely stalking Lucy Denton, but he wanted to humiliate her. He wanted her alive to do that" Jay said. "That's what he's claiming, anyway" Voight said. "Yeah, we're tracking down another person of interest, some ambulance chaser that Lucy was probably sleeping with" I say. "Look, you think there's something to this lawyer angle, run it down, but Gage stays in custody" Voight said.
When we got an address on the lawyer, Al and Jay went to check it out, but it didn't really lead to anything. Patrol then caught a small lead when they talked to Owen Reese, Shelby Denton's boyfriend. He said Jordan used to follow them to an abandoned house, and upon inspection, Sean and Kim found Jordan, who was injured, but alive.
"Okay, so Jordan's alive, but he's critical and heading into surgery now" Jay said. "All right, we like the dad for this. I just got off the phone with Dentons' bank. They've got $800 in savings. Credit cards are maxed out. They're on their second mortgage" Adam said. "Both Wes and Lucy Denton have $500,000 life insurance policies taken out when they were flush. Wes' lapsed, but he kept the premium paid on Lucy's, and with double indemnity, Wes Denton is going to get paid out $1 million" Kevin said.
"Look, I hate to ruin the party here, but I cross-referenced all the subscribers and mudd and tolls on Wes' phone. Nothing stood out. Tech lab checked all the searches and the activity on the home computer, nothing. So if he hired someone to kill his wife, he was careful" Jay said. "So he was careful. We've got financial motive for the husband. We need to bring him in" Antonio said. "Well, he isn't coming in voluntarily again. I'll tell you that much" Voight said. "If Wes hears we found his kid and he might get ID'd, he'll bolt" Al said. "Plus, to me, he looks like one of those guys whose mouth starts moving when they feel the bracelets slapped on their wrists" Antonio said. "Let's hit it then" Voight said. "Lets go" Al said to Adam.
.............................................
"Hey Sarge, Al and Adam got Wes downstairs in the cage" I say. "Did they give him anything on the ride over" Voight asked. "As far as I know, not a word" I reply. "Good. Any word on the boy" Voight asked me. "He's still in surgery" I say as Voight exited his office to go downstairs.
"Before they went bust, the Dentons donated to a lot of charities. They were on the board of directors at the O.G. Grill. It's a catering company up on the north side that hires ex-cons" Jay said. "Yeah, they teach them food service skills. I got a cousin that went through there. A couple cousins, actually, and my aunt" Kevin said. "Right, well, it's a good place to hire a parolee looking to do a murder for hire" Jay said. "It's worth checking out. What's the address" Antonio asked. "I know how to get there. We can roll" Kevin said to him and grabbed his jacket.
The manager of the grill gave us access to photos of former employees, and when Adam and Voight did a photo array in front of Jordan, he was able to pick one of the guys out as the one who was in his house. "Frank Carriger did five years for aggravated burglary and narcotics possession. When he was released, his P.O. got him a job at the O.G. Grill" Voight said. "I put out an investigative alert on him" Antonio said. "Any IKAs for this guy" Voight asked. "Yeah, I got his last three" Adam said. "Yeah, but we still can't find any communication between him and Wes Denton" I say. "What about between him and Lucy's stalker, Gage" Adam asked. "Zero" Al said. "Well, somebody gave Carriger that alarm code" Voight said. "We might have eyes on Carriger. Loyola Station, boarding the el right now" Kevin said. "Beautiful" Voight said.
...........................................
"I don't see him anywhere on the train" Jay said through the radio. While Antonio, Jay, and Kevin were searching the station, Al, Adam, and I were in a car on the streets below. "I see him. He just exited the train. Suspect is heading down the station to Ashland and Lake" Antonio said. "There. That's him" Al said and pointed to a guy that ran right in front of us. "All right, we've got him" I tell Al before exiting the car, Adam hot on my heels.
I chased Carriger up some more stairs and onto another platform, and he ran into a train car just as the doors began to close. I managed to get through, but Adam got stuck. "Go" he said to me. I nodded and continued chasing Carriger, finally catching him as he tried to switch cars. "Stay down. Put your arms behind your back. You like shooting kids, Carriger" I ask and handcuff him. "Owen Reese, the girl's boyfriend. He had me do it" Carriger said.
Turns out, Owen did have Carriger commit the crime, so in the end, the case was solved. "Hey, Arch. What's up" I ask into my phone. "The team and I, we were going to go out and get some beers. You in" Archie asked me. "Uh, sure. I'll meet you guys at Molly's in a bit. I'm just leaving work now" I say. "Cool. I'll see you there" Archie said and hung up.
"Hey, Yn. You did great today" Jay said. "You did too. I'm glad I got to be your partner, even if it was only for a few cases" I say. "What are you talking about" Jay asked me. "You didn't hear? Erin is coming back to Intelligence" I say. The look on Jay's face told me he didn't know about Erin. "Okay, well, I'm meeting up with some friends, so I've got to go. We'll talk later, okay" I say. "Yeah. Okay" Jay said. "Great. I'll see you tomorrow" I say.
