Before my brother left, he gave us three simple instructions.

1. Don't leave the house

2. If we leave the house, don't go to the Bayou

and

3. Don't talk about the witchy Harvest until he gets back

It took me the entire morning to realize I was obeying my brother's orders, which made me question my sanity just a tick.

Though I hate to admit it, he was right about not going to the Bayou. He's finally playing it safe with Marcel and keeping up a cover. Hayley got attacked because of my foolishness, not his. If Marcel tracks the dead witches back to us then Hayley would be in serious danger because of me.

All of this makes perfect sense. Which is why I was not at all surprised by Sophie already making a break for it.

She's preparing a backpack when Hayley and I stop her. "Hey. What the hell?"

Hayley was more curious than stern. "You're going out there anyway, aren't you? I wanna go with you." I did a double take at that.

Sophie immediately shook her head. "No, thanks. Already got assaulted by Klaus this morning. Don't need a repeat."

"I think you going will get you in enough trouble to begin with, love." I stated. "You're linked to Hayley, remember?"

"What if whatever is responsible for all those dead witches is still out there? We've already established that it likes me and hates witches, so you'll be safer with me." I figured this was why she wanted to go.

"Hayley, I think we should take a pause on this plan for a week or two." I tried slowly reasoning with her.

"You're the one who said we could go to the Bayou." She tried to pull a fast one.

"I referred to a time when things were quiet. Not today, when we know Marcel is going to be there and cannot know you exist." It's not that hard.

Sophie makes a break for the door. "Sorry if I'm not buying your sudden concern for my safety."

I swiftly slam the door shut. "As if you have any right to be snippy

Hayley glares at Sophie. "Listen. The whole reason I came to this stupid town in the first place was to learn more about my family. Your sister's the one that told me Marcel ran the werewolves out of the Quarter into the Bayou. And last night, I'm pretty sure that some guardian-angel-wolf saved my life. So, I'm coming with you."

"Hayley, I swear, please use your common sense. You told me you saw the wolf before in the backyard during Marcel's party, so I doubt it'll disappear. We can go to the Bayou another day when it isn't swamped with vampires. And you." I turn to Sophie. "Are not leaving this house until my brother returns. We aren't done asking questions. Marcel sees you breaking his rules, he will kill you, and Hayley will die as well. My advice, get a new magic system. Sacrificial is pretty fun I hear."

Hayley isn't budging. "Talia, I am sick and tired of sitting in this house night and day waiting for my baby to be born so she can sit in this house night and day. I've done everything Klaus has wanted, I'm keeping the baby healthy while he tries to build us a safe home that he says will come but he also said Elijah would come back soon, so I'm starting to think you're onto something about him being a pathological liar. I've done everything you all have wanted and have been given nothing in return. But this, this is why I'm here. I'm finding my family, and I'm not waiting another day!" At the end of her venting session, she was out of breath.

I keep a straight face. "How long have you kept that in?"

She just shrugs. "Since Elijah disappeared."
