Chapter Twenty-Six

Naruto supposed that he should have done this as soon as he'd arrived in Konoha, but he'd never gotten around to doing so. At first it was because Minato had no idea that he knew Tsunade's mother, but after... well he was still working on a reason for that after part.

The guards were much easier to pass than they had been the first time, simply telling them who he was seemed to be enough to grant him access to the Senju compound.

Her house was in the Senju compound, which was unsurprising. What was surprising, however, was the incredibly large house that she lived in, having three stories, none of the levels wanting for space. The gardens out front were perfectly kept while the windows were open, allowing fresh air to flow through the house.

It was the Clan Head's house for the Senju clan, not surprising if one thought about the scale, but interesting if one thought about the resident. Naruto knew that Tsunade didn't live here, occupying an apartment in another part of the village, and he didn't know of anyone living with her mother.

Did Miki truly stay in this house by herself?

Deciding to find out for himself and tick off something that he should have done long ago, Naruto walked up to the door and knocked, before standing back and waiting for someone to come to the door, if anyone was there. Miki might be going for a stroll for all he knew.

After ten minutes and another two knocks, Naruto extended his senses over the building, checking to see if there was anyone was within. There was, one in a room on the top floor towards the back of the house, most likely not hearing his knocking because of the distance between them, along with the walls.

Deciding there was no harm, seeing as no one was around, Naruto allowed his body to break down into air before slipping under the door and reforming on the other side. It was incredibly similar to how he entered this building the first time, back when it was only a month or so after Tsunade was born.

Now moving through the house, Naruto allowed his gaze to drift to the walls, where paintings and photographs hung. Images of a far happier time in Tsunade's life, it seemed, as in almost all, she was smiling brightly at the camera, or painter. There was one of her with Jiraiya, Orochimaru and Hiruzen, back when the four were much younger, when their team first formed he assumed. Another of her and Hashirama, a painting, with her as a baby and Hashirama cradling her. There was one of Tsunade, as a teenager, with her arm around a much smaller boy with brown hair, Nawaki if he had to guess. There were many more in that similar vein, pictures of a better time, some with Tsunade and others without.

None of the images had him within them, something that Naruto didn't know that he should be happy about anymore, it was just another reminder of how he hadn't lived up to his responsibilities as Tsunade's godfather. Not that he could really claim that title anymore.

The distance from the door to the room where the source of chakra was seemed to stretch on forever as he passed more and more images of a happier Senju family, when there were more than two members. It was only when Naruto approached the door though, that he wondered if there were any pictures he'd missed.

Shoving aside his nerves and steeling himself, Naruto opened the door.

The room was white, almost painfully so, the only splashes of colour coming from objects posted around the space, almost like a makeshift hospital room. There were tissues on the bedside table, flowers on the other, all that was missing was the equipment.

Miki was laying down on a bed with the headrest leaning up against the wall, pointing towards him, and allowing him to watch as her eyes went wide as he stepped into the room. Once blond hair had become streaked with grey, the blonde sections of her hair showing grey roots, wrinkles on her face told one that she had spent much time smiling. About to assure her that he wasn't about do anything, Naruto was rendered silent when she spoke before him.
