Chapter Thirty

The day had started off normally for Naruto. He'd woken up, had a filling breakfast and then walked the twenty or so metres that had separated his residence from Minato's. From there, Naruto had greeted his son, daughter-in-law and grandson, spending time with the trio before they all went off for the day.

Minato went to the Hokage Tower, where he'd spend the day running the village. He'd return for lunch and a few hours before dinner for those meals, which he'd share with Kushina and Kōji.

The only female in the family would be stocking house before moving on to training. It was something that had taken up much of the time over the last few years, though Kushina had made sure that this didn't infringe on her time with her family.

As for the child, the now seven-year-old Kōji now usually spent the majority of his days at the academy, much to Naruto's silent disgruntlement. To Naruto's relief, they weren't actually taught how to kill, not blatantly anyway. Fighting styles that could be deadly, skills with sharp weapons that cut through flesh and points at which the body was weakest, but nothing over a certain level.

This was expected until they moved into their Genin Teams. It would be a time that Naruto would find hard to stomach. The only reason he could still give Kōji smiles was because of the happiness in the child's voice when he spoke of his time in the academy. At the very least, Kōji was doing this because he wanted too, if because he didn't know of what was truly expected of him in the future.

Once the day had nearly ended however, was where things deviated from normal. Naruto had been seated in his house, reading a book he'd recently purchased about the rapidly developing field of science.

With the tenuous, at best, peace between the nations of the planet, people had eventually turned their attention from warfare to other, more commercial, pursuits. The invention of several marvellous inventions, like harnessing electricity, had revolutionised the world and how people lived.

Naruto was browsing through many such discoveries in his book when Kushina and Minato had burst into his house, Kōji in tow. From what he was told by the duo before they left, leaving Kōji with him, was that there was some kind of emergency at the hospital involving one of Kushina's friends and they were going to offer their support.

Naruto had entertained Kōji for a couple of hours, though this was no easy task. Restrained to his house, there was little for the seven year old to do, especially now that he was no longer entertained as easily by his grandfather's stories. Thankfully, Naruto was able to distract the child with several small wooden figures that he had allowed Kōji to play with.

Even so, after the second hour had passed, he was beginning to wonder what was keeping his son and daughter-in-law, surely they could have sent word of what was happening? Naruto wasn't sure how long he could keep Kōji occupied and didn't want to put the child to bed in case something

It was only five minutes after these musing that a knock on the door provided answers. Minato's grim face greeted him when he opened it, making Naruto know he wouldn't like what was coming.

"What happened?" Naruto asked, stepping to the side to allow his son in, and closing the door when he did.

"Hi Tou-san!" Kōji exclaimed when he saw his father, giving him a grin from his position on the floor of his grandfather's living room. Minato managed to return his son's smile before turning to his father.

"Could we go to your room?" Minato asked, with a subtle motion of his head to his son. He didn't want Kōji to overhear what was about to be said. Naruto nodded, and moved over to his room, while Minato then spoke to his son. "Kōji, tou-san and jiji will be back in a second, okay?" The child nodded and went back to playing with the small wooden figures that his grandfather had given him.
