We were inside the marshlands again and using the Lizardmen's home base the day after the battle to discuss on what would happen now. I sat on a bench in front of the throne, while the representatives of the Lizardmen took one side and the Orcs took the other. I guess I was being the mediator for both sides. With me was Shion, Sesshomaru, Jaken, Souei, Benimaru and Hakurou. Treyni was also here.
"Chairwoman Kagome Taisho, please begin the conference." Treyni looked to me.
"Uh...I've never led a meeting like this before, so it's not my strong suit. So I'll just say what's on my mind." I said to everyone.
It was true. Sesshomaru was the one who was usually doing this since in our old dimension and the time period, it was unwise or forbidden for a woman to speak. Now that I was here, I was allowed to be myself.
"I'd like you to save your deliberations until after that." I looked around the room. "I'll start by saying this: I don't intend to charge the Orcs with any crimes." The Orcs gasped. "I know this may upset the Lizardmen, who suffered the most casualties, but hear me out. The cause of all this was starvation due to a famine. Anyone, of any race, might have made the same choices under those conditions. Of course, this is just my public stance on the matter."
"Then may we hear your personal thoughts on it, as well?" The Lizardmen chieftain asked.
"I've taken all the Orcs' sins upon myself. If anyone had a complaint, bring it to me." I said. As soon as I said that, an Orc got to his feet. I immediately recognized him as the second in command.
"Please, wait!" He put his hands out. "Surely there is no logic to..."
"That was my promise with the Demon Lord Geld." I clenched my hands mentally as I looked straight at him. He flinched, completely in shock before he backed up and sat down.
"I see." The Lizardmen chieftain hummed. "However, I feel that answer is somewhat unfair."
Yeah, I can see why he wouldn't accept it so easily. I sighed. Benimaru walked foward, making me look at him.
"There is one immutable rule shared among all monsters: Survival of the fittest. The moment they faced each other, they were both prepared for that."
"But she is a human." I heard someone whisper.
"She did risk her life to save yours did she not?" Benimaru countered.
"You guys lost your home, too. Don't you have any complaints?" I looked to Benimaru, then at everyone else.
"I would be lying if I said we didn't, but if it happens again, we will not disgrace ourselves a second time." Benimaru stated. The others nodded their heads. I softly sighed in relief.
"I see...that is a fair point. But there is one thing I must know." The chieftain looked to me.
"What's that?"
"What will be done with the Orcs?" He asked. "You have said you will not charge them with any crimes. Does that mean you intend to accept them all of their suvivors?"
I leaned back on the bench, moving my leg over top of my other. "Even with their numbers down, there are still 150,000 of them. That being the case..." I whispered, then raised my voice. "It may sound like some kind of dream, but I'm thinking we can all work together."
"Work together?" The chieftain looked to me.
"Meaning what, exactly?" The daughter asked. The second in command Orc looked at me for further details.
