Sadly, no, this is not my idea. I do not know whose it is, but I saw it in a Tumblr post, and I loved the idea so I grabbed at the chance. I'm completely in love with the idea.

"Mother?" A small boy, no older than seven, tugged at his mothers sleeve at the dinner table.
"Manners, Draco." The woman scolded. "What?"
"Why is everything black and blue?" Draco asked, looking around him. Everything he saw was in various shades of the two colors, ranging from almost white blue to navy blue, and almost white gray-black to darker than a night sky without stars.
"Because we're magic, Draco. Now eat your dinner." She dismissed.
"But, mother, why can't I see the colors you can? Reds and greens and yellows?"
Narcissa Malfoy, wife to Lucious Malfoy, and mother to Draco Malfoy sighed. "Eat your dinner, Draco. Mother will explain after." His father commanded. Draco slumped for a second, before remembering his manners, and sat back up, quickly and quietly eating.
After dinner, Draco asked again, but his parents told him he needed to get ready for bed first. Once he had gotten dressed accordingly, brushed his teeth and hair, and had gotten under the covers, his mother finally sat. She had been expecting this question for some time now. She was surprised it didn't come sooner, actually. Though, Malfoy's didn't ask questions, so she should be proud, she supposed.
Draco sat, waiting patiently, his hands folded. Really, he was a star child. "Wizards and Witches, are special. On the day we're born we see everything in two colors only. Only Magic people, however. Even if the amount of magic in their blood is small. Purebloods or squibs.
"Now, we see everything in proper color, once we've laid eyes on our soul mate. And only our soul mate. Once you've seen them, everything is in all colors. This is a magical system that was granted to all magic folk thousands of years ago, to make it easier for us to find our other part. Though, there is a bit of a tragic side.
"If our soul mate dies, then everything reverts back to black and blue. It's tragic, but death is a part of life." Narcissa studied her son, who wore a thoughtful and sleepy expression.
"So, once I've met my soul mate, I'll be able to see all the colors you and father can see?"
"Yes, Draco."
"How come we need one?"
"They're our opposite, or our perfect match, depending on the personality of the two, and we need them to balance us."
"Does everyone magical have one?"
"Yes, but some don't meet theirs. The world is a big place, after all."
"That's sad...mother, what if mine is a muggle?" Draco scrunched his nose up.
Narcissa gave a tight lipped smile. "Draco, while I would prefer someone of Pureblood status, no one would judge you on your soul mate. Muggle or not, male or female. We do not get to chose, so why should we be mocked? Besides, everyone has one. When you meet yours you wont care what they are."
Draco's eyes had widened slightly at the thought of his soul mate being male, but soon his eyes dropped, sleep taking over. He yawned into his hand, and his mother tucked him in, before kissing his forehead and shutting off the lights, walking out.

Little Harry Potter of number four Privet Drive never understood why he couldn't see the colors everyone else could. He got frequently bullied, and mocked, because all he could see where various shades of two colors. It just Harry all the more an outcast. Even at home he got picked on by Dudley, because he couldn't see the colors of Dudleys supposedly red bike. Harry didn't even know what red looked like!
