the next day was christmas eve and esmeray hadn't gotten anything. no presents for jack or his family.
she wanted to at least get them something for letting her crash their christmas.
esmeray got ready for the morning, dressing warmly to walk the shops downtown.
"im gonna go downtown to do some shopping." esmeray said to jack. he was laying in his bed still half asleep.
"how are you getting there?" jack asked.
"uber. i'll be fine jack. id just like to get out on my own." esmeray assured.
"i'll call you if you need anything." esmeray kissed jack's cheek and left the house to get into her uber.
the shops were cute and esmeray could shop for herself if she could. but she wasnt there to shop of her.
after picking out quinn and luke's gifts, she was on the hunt for jim, ellen, and jack.
after going to another shop, she had jim and ellens gifts, but she had no idea what to get jack.
jack had almost everything, and she didn't want to get him hockey related things. he had basically everything related to hockey.
esmeray had a great idea. there was a sport apparel store close by, and maybe if she got a replica of luke's michigan hockey jersey that-one he didn't have-that would be his christmas gift.
she called luke and quinn, asking if that was a good idea, which it was, she went to the store and skimmed through the many michigan hockey jerseys they had.
after finding luke's jersey, in the right size for jack, esmeray payed for it and carried the bag back towards where she started.
esmeray called for an uber, picking her up and bringing her back to the hughes house.
jack was outside with quinn and luke, so she snuck upstairs and hid the gifts on the closet floor.
esmeray came back downstairs and opened the glass sliding door. jack looked back and smiled at her. he was a little oblivious to things, so the floor was a perfect spot.
"hey, how was shopping?" jack asked. he made room for esmeray to sit next to him. he wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her in close.
"good. all the shops downtown were so much better than the ones back on the boardwalk." esmeray chuckled. she noticed quinn and luke give her funny looks so she explained.
"i live in south jersey. cape may. right on the beach. we always went shopping on the boardwalks and they weren't all that great." esmeray said.
"the beach? man, you must be so lucky." luke sighed.
"it wasn't all that fun. we never really went on vacations. all of them were to the beach. you can only go so many times before you really get burnt out." esmeray said.
"alright, i'm cold. im going inside." quinn told them. he got up and went inside, leaving luke, jack, and esmeray.
"me too. i dont like the cold." luke got up and went inside to.
"i don't mind the cold." esmeray chuckled.
"you would think that being hockey players, they would be immune to the cold but they aren't." jack said.
