Gavin

With a bored expression on my face with my AirPods in drowning out my little sister and mother conversation in the front seat, I look out my window at the trees passing by as I think to myself how I got roped into coming on this trip. Oh yeah, because my mom bribed me with a promise of visiting the college I'm gonna be starting next fall if I spend this one day with them at this festival my sister has been talking about for the past two weeks for her 16th birthday as well as pictures with the bluebonnets like true Texans.

I sigh as I look at the clock on the dash that reads 10 minutes to 1pm knowing still had about a 30 minute drive before we arrived. I'm about to look out my window again when I see my sister giving me a look saying she as talking to me and I didn't respond to her, taking my AirPods out so I could hear her " what?" I ask her. She rolls her eyes at me as she asks again " do you want to get lunch now or there at a vendor?" " whatever you want its your day Lee" Whatever Leeann wants she gets it's been that way since she was born. I don't resent her for it I know  mom struggled with two miscarriages before she came along, even at 4 years old I knew she was gonna be special. I love her, but I also love to give her hell at times. She knows I'd do anything for her, clearly since I'm in this 4 hour car ride on this trip to a festival. I give her a genuine small smile as she rolls her eyes again before facing mom to resume their conversation, I put my pods back in and listen to my music . My parents got a divorce 3 years ago and he's already found a new family for himself so it's just mom and Leeann that I care about. Even though he was a great father before he left he seems to forget who his children are and hasn't really talked to either of us since last Christmas. As a result of his abandonment I sort of went off the deep end, I started sleeping around and got into illegal street racing to get a little side money. To everyone at school I'm the golden boy quarterback, I wouldn't call myself a player as most do I just havent found any girl that keeps my interest more than one night I mean they're all the same in my hometown. They all just want a night with me to boost their popularity so the way I see it it's a win -win for us both.

I start thinking about what college life would be like with all the new possibilities of partied and girls when I get a text from my cousin Rhys. My moms sister and her step son Rhys, who's 19 as well, are meeting us there. Rhys and I have gotten close over the years almost brother type instead of a cousin bond. Aunt Cora and Uncle Axton have been married for 10 years now and live about an hour away from us in a small country town compared to the small city life of Beaumont where we have small skyscrapers, our clubs, the all and other forms of entertainment that his little town of Dayton doesnt have that's why most oftentimes get together he comes to me and on occasion I go out to his for a party or two on the weekend.

Rhys is very outgoing and loves to party, his blonde hair and ocean b,he eyes have all the girls falling at his feet while I'm more the silent brooder type but around my "friends" I'm the life of the party. Most times I put on my fake face to live up to the life I've come accustomed to in fear of being shunned if I don't play my part. Rhys' text says they're parking and gonna find a spot o wait for us. I reply back that we are about 5 minutes away as I  seen a sign for the festival parking up the road.

Hoping this day goes by fast so I can finally get what was promised, not knowing how my life was about to change.
