"Jisung, are you sure about this? I don't know how I feel about it," I pat down the black faux leather skirt I'm wearing with a sigh. I've never worn anything like this in front of anyone. It's not like I don't like it. It's actually a really nice article of clothing. The only thing that is bothering me is what other people will think. "Won't people think I'm trying too hard?"
Jisung turns to me with a raised brow. Usually he wears sweats and bucket hats, but just for today he's wearing a suit. It's black with white lines flowing up and down, and his undershirt is grey with white polka dots. He looks like a completely different person. He looks so manly. I on the other hand look like a girl. Which I have no problems with. Again, I'm scared of other people. Back in Australia you saw people doing this kind of stuff too. The difference is, I'm not in Australia right now, and back then if I had wanted to do it I would need friends to give me the confidence. I'm just making excuses, aren't I?
"What do you mean? We are celebrating twenty. Just be yourself. If you want to do it then do it. Screw everyone else's opinion. We do what we want to be happy. If that skirt makes you happy and gives you the much needed confidence boost, then wear it. You're gorgeous, Felix. You should try and see yourself through Changbin's eyes. All he ever talks about is how pretty you are," Jisung tells me this while he finishes up covering his lashes with a light mascara. He's calling me gorgeous, but isn't he the one that looks amazing even without makeup?
"I guess you're right," I whisper. I fix my hoodie into my skirt and stare at my black and white converse for a few seconds before looking back at my reflection in the mirror. I think I should leave my freckles uncovered. I don't show them much and since today is the day I become twenty, I might as well show them the new me I want to be. The guy who isn't afraid to be himself. Actually, it's not my birthday yet. It's still the fourteenth; Jisung's birthday. We are holding a party from 11pm to 1am. This way we can celebrate both our days.
"Well, I'm finished. You want me to finish your makeup for you?" Jisung asks, waving around a stick of lipgloss.
I shrug and allow him to do it since he's so excited to do so. After he's done, we head out of my house. Minho and Changbin had to get ready at Jisung's dorm, so we went to mine. "Where are we meeting them again?"
"They sent me the address, let me look," Jisung pulls out his phone and scrolls through his messages with Seungmin. "Bingo. Found it. Let's take a cab there just in case we get drunk. It's better than having my car towed."
I think I should get a car soon. Everyone has one but Jeongin and I. I feel like I'm bothering them whenever I need to get picked up or taken home. Cabs can be expensive, and buses are so crowded, but my guilt is bigger than both. "I'll pay for it," I tell Jisung, pulling out my own phone to get us a ride.
When we arrive at the destination, me and Jisung are met with a small pub. It's a cute place, but when we get inside, all the lights are off. "You think we got the wrong place?" Jisung asks.
"How am I supposed to know? Just find the lights," I tell him.
As soon as I say that, the lights flicker on and confetti flies through the air. "Happy birthday!"
Jisung and I look at each other while we hold onto our chests. That was terrifying. Our friends are scattered around the open room, smiling and laughing at our reactions.
"You looked so scared!" Jeongin says, walking over to give each of us a hug.
"I was," Jisung whines.
"I think Felix was the most surprised," Seungmin tells us, also coming over to give us a hug.
"I've never had a birthday party before, so, this is the first time I've been surprised like this," I answer, giving Seungmin's body a gentle squeeze.
Jisung and I find out later that the place they rented out is a bar famous for open mic nights. Of course Changbin is the one to rent it. Which gets me thinking about his parents. He still hasn't told me anything. I tend to talk about my family just because of how much I miss them, but Changbin hasn't said a word about his. It's fine for now. We just got done fighting, I don't want to start another. Plus, it's not that big of a deal. While Jisung looks through his presents and blows out the candles on his cake, I lay back and enjoy the image of my friends. It's different spending a birthday with them. I feel some arms wrap around my waist, pulling me into a firm chest for a back hug.
"You look amazing tonight," my boyfriend whispers into my ear.
I hum and turn around in his arms, smiling wide when I meet his gaze. "You don't look too bad yourself," I whisper back. Changbin's hair is swept to the side and he's wearing black dress pants with a white button up. Though, much to my eyes pleasure, the first two buttons aren't tied together to the cloth. His chest is slightly exposed.
Changbin leans down for a kiss. One I've been waiting for all day. Our lips lock for a second before we pull away and look back at Jisung. My head moves to rest on Changbin's shoulder, but it pulls itself up when I see the gift Minho got for Jisung. It's a really expensive looking locket necklace. Since I'm farther away I can't see the picture inside of it clear, still I know it's of him and Minho. Jisung gives his boyfriend a huge hug and then we cut his cake. Apparently they bought us separate cakes which I think is cute. When it gets around the time for me to open presents and blow out the candles, I choose my cake first. My hands fold together tightly and I close my eyes, thinking up a quick wish.
