I watch as my boyfriend surfs through the channels of the television. He's wearing those reading glasses again. I can't take my eyes off of him. He's so incredibly handsome. "Do you know," I start my sentence, Changbin turning to look at me. "that you are so sexy with those glasses on."
Changbin's ears start to turn red. He's embarrassed. "Stop that," he tells me.
"I'm serious. I mean, you are always attractive. Those glasses just add so much to your appearance."
Changbin sighs and flicks my forehead lightly. Before I can complain and tell him exactly what I mean, his phone rings. He picks it up and puts the call on speaker phone when he reads the id. "Hello?"
"Hey, it's me," a woman says. It's Changbin's older sister, I recognize.
"What's up?" Changbin grabs the remote and turns the volume down.
"Are you free?"
Changbin looks at me. I nod my head, signaling for him to tell her yes. "Yeah, why?"
"I want to talk to you about mom and dad."
Changbin never got around to explaining what happened that night, so hearing her mention it gives me a good reason to talk to him about it later. Much to my surprise though, he doesn't get up and leave. "What about them?"
"I talked with them about the night you introduced them to Felix," she mentions my name and I start to push myself up from the couch. Changbin grabs my hand and pulls me back, shaking his head. He wants me to stay. I bite my lip and nod hesitantly. "they told me some things I think you would want to know."
"Are they things that I can say to Felix?" Changbin doesn't ask why they won't call him instead. We both know he wouldn't answer them either way.
"Surprisingly, yes. I think Felix would be happy to hear these things."
"Alright, say it. Your on speaker phone by the way. Felix can hear you."
"Hello, Noona," I greet.
"Good afternoon, Felix. I'm glad you're here. As I was saying, Changbin and I's parents talked to me about the night they met your family. At first they were perplexed and quite against the whole thing. They really have changed though," Changbin's sister pauses. I think the last sentence is aimed for my boyfriend. "They sat down with my when I asked them what they thought. They said that Felix seems like a very sweet guy and you look happy when you are with him. I know I shouldn't be the one saying this, but they miss you, Changbin. They really regret everything they said to you through out the years. Mom is over the business thing and is actually glad that I took over because she thinks I know how to please customers better. Dad doesn't care who you bring home either. They just want you back."
I watch as my boyfriends guard slowly decreases until tears roll down his face. He's been away from home for so long. "So, what's the point?" Changbin asks.
"They want you to bring Felix home."
"No way," Changbin answers immediately, wiping his face with his hand.
"Changbin, wait. Don't be so quick to make a decision. This is important," I tell him, grabbing his hand.
"I'm not going to bring you into a danger zone," he argues.
"It's three against one and I promise I'm strong enough to protect myself from any hateful words they might say."
It goes quiet. I can't tell what's on the siblings minds. Is this even real? What if they just want to humiliate me and force Changbin to end things? No, I have to have faith.
"Changbin, I know you hold everything they've done against them, but they genuinely want to rebuild their relationship with you. Please just go home for one dinner. If it ends horribly you never have to go back again. I never ask anything of you."
Changbin looks like he's contemplating it. He doesn't reply to his sister. I take the phone and say something instead. "He's thinking it over. I'll tell him to call you back when we've decided. Thank you for telling us about this. I'll try my best to help him find the right solution."
We share our goodbyes and then end the phone call. Changbin is still in a daydream. I place my hand on his shoulder once his phone is placed down. "Babe, we need to think this over carefully. Don't let your emotions take control, okay?" He takes a deep breath and pushes his fingers through his hair. I know now that he's listening to me. "They've done some terrible things, I know, but they are still your blood family. You only get one. As much as you want to hate them, I know deep down you love them. That's just the type of person you are, Changbin. Your heart is so big. I think we should set aside those hateful feelings you have for them. Just for a single night. Like your sister said, if they turn negative we'll never contact them again. There is a chance that they want to make it up to you. Do you want to throw that chance away because you are scared? You'll spend the rest of your life without talking to them again, and they'll spend the rest of theirs wallowing in regret. I know you don't actually wish pain upon people. Whatever happens we'll get through it. I think we should go," I explain it as carefully as I can, making sure not to use words that could potential ally trigger him.
He doesn't answer me. I head into the kitchen to make dinner while he thinks it over. I don't expect him to know the right thing to say so quickly. It's a tough equation. I just hope he doesn't choose something he'll end up regretting. Truthfully, I have a few things to say to his parents if it does go south. Once dinner is finished Changbin comes in and wraps me in a hug. That's when I know what his decision is.
"I'm sorry I'm advance if they say something they shouldn't," he whispers into my ear.
I rub his back reassuringly when I say, "it's okay. You'll make up for the hurt with your love."
Changbin's sister hears the news from her brother not long after dinner. She even texts me to thank me for helping him come to the conclusion he did. If I'm being honest, I don't think I did that much. I know deep down Changbin would have come to me a few days later with a guilty look, asking me if I would meet them, if he didn't accept it tonight. No matter how hard he tries, he can't hate his parents. I think we all have some kind of love for our enemies. They keep us going and build us. I guess it really just depends on what they do though. Some acts are unforgivable. Whether what I say is right or wrong, what matters is that Changbin is going to rekindle his relationship with his family; hopefully. That's something I can pray for.
