"Whatever."
Hyunjin and I are sitting in the library, conversing quietly with each other. This conversation we are having is actually an argument. He's been in a bad mood lately. Whenever I see him he's being sarcastic and rude.
"Are you really not going to tell me what's wrong?" I ask, tapping my fingers on the table impatiently. "I don't like arguing with you." Hyunjin sips his drink with a roll of his eyes. I inhale deeply. I know he's upset about something. Why is he having such a hard time telling me about it? I brush my hair back and pull out my phone. Jisung has sent a few texts. He keeps sending pictures of his daily life. It's pretty funny. I snicker and send him a heart.
"We don't hang out as much as we used to," Hyunjin says. His soft voice pulls my attention away from my screen. He's finally going to open up? I set my phone down and hum.
"And? Is that why you are upset?"
Hyunjin sighs. "You only spend time with Changbin, Jisung, and Minho. I feel abandoned. I mean, you guys have significant others, but I don't. I just feel left in the dust. I thought we were best friends. Now it just feels like I'm a guy in association with you."
My heart breaks hearing him say these things. I've never had a best friend before. I didn't know it could have such an effect on someone. "Hyunjin," I mutter. "I'm sorry. Let's make plans this week. We can hang out just us. I'll make time for you and we can go shopping." Hyunjin bites his lip. I don't think he wants to give in so easily. "Jinnie, please?"
The fashion major nods and gives me a light smile. "Fine."
I keep my word and Hyunjin and I do hang out. We decide that the mall is the best place for us to explore. The first thing we do is get coffee's. Us college students need our unhealthy addiction to keep awake. "What do you wanna buy?" I ask, sipping my frappe.
"New shoes, a hat, oh I was thinking we could get a friendship bracelet," Hyunjin answers, his head tilting from side to side happily.
I laugh and nod. I don't understand how Hyunjin is still single. As his friend, I can count all his amazing qualities. Sure, there's a few that are troublesome, overall though, he's total boyfriend material. He doesn't drink a lot, he doesn't smoke, and he gets good grades. He has a path set for himself which he's passionate about. He's handsome and equally cute. He can dance, rap, sing. He is a bit of a child at times, however. Like when he doesn't get what he wants he'll be pouty for a few hours. He can be easily jealous too. Very clingy as well. Those are things you can easily fall for though. I mean, clingy people are fun to be around.
"Jinnie," I call his name to try and get his attention.
"What's up?"
"I've always been curious about why you chose to talk to me in class that one time."
The first time Hyunjin ever spoke to me was in our statistics class. I don't know why the hell he's in a statistics class as a fashion major, but he is. He started talking to me randomly about how good my looks were and that I'd make a good model. I didn't believe him since he was a complete stranger. I still don't believe him. I will never tell him that.
"You looked lonely. I only had Minho and some other fake ass friends, so I was too. Your face is so genuine that I thought, that guy would be a good friend, or something. Your face always expresses when you are feeling something. It gives you a trustworthy vibe. Plus, I needed inspiration for a piece and you happened to catch my attention. I ended up getting an A with some extra credit points for that assignment."
I coo at my best friend and wrap my arms around his. "You're so cute," I tell him in a high pitch.
Hyunjin pushes my head away with his finger. "Yeah, yeah."
"Really though, I want to thank you for talking to me. My life would've never been this good if I hadn't met you. You gave me something I was missing," I whisper, suddenly feeling sappy.
"Don't let Changbin hear you say that to me," Hyunjin jokes.
"Changbin knows I love him. There's different things I was missing. What Changbin gives me, I would've never been able to find that missing piece if I hadn't met you. You are the one who dragged me to that concert that night. Changbin is my best lover, but you are my best friend."
Hyunjin throws his arm around my shoulder and gives me a side hug. "Cheesy. Stop or I'm gonna cry."
My best friend and I talk some more as we walk around. Eventually we stumble upon a shoe store and we try some on. I decide not to get anything. Nothing catches my eye. Hyunjin on the other hand does. He gets some black high tops with red accents. We head out after that and try to find a hat shop. Unlike with the shoes, I do get some hats. Two. One for me and one for Changbin. I know Changbin likes to wear baseball caps on stage. I don't particularly like caps so I get myself a bucket hat instead. It's black with a sunflower emoji in the middle of the front. Hyunjin buys something similar but it has the cherry emoji.
"So, friendship bracelet?" Hyunjin mentions the last thing on our list as we enter a jewelry store.
"I don't really like bracelets. What about a necklace?"
Hyunjin shakes his head at my suggestion. "I'll have to take it on and off so much," he explains. "You like rings, right? We can do that."
My eyebrows raise in excitement. I love rings. They are so romantic and fun to play with when I'm bored. Hyunjin and I look around through the see through cases for a few minutes before spotting something we like. There's two separate rings next to each other. One is a clear white that looks like a smoothed crystal while the other is grey with the same texture.
"What about those? We can each wear both," I say. Hyunjin takes a closer look. He's probably making sure that they are worth as much as they are. He is a fashion major, so it's no doubt he wants it to be able to go with everything too.
"Yeah, I like them," he calls over the worker and we pay for them separately. When we get out of the mall, we look at our rings and take a picture to post on our socials.
I'm really lucky to have someone like Hyunjin.
