"So Ms. Alayna Hasan. You're saying your sister got a B-..last semester, is that right?"
The prosecutor, Mr. O'Reilly was 5'6 at most, having a belly similar to that of a 6 months pregnant lady, a thin, almost bald hairline and a weird, satisfied smile on his face all the time.
Alayna looked at Errum. She was fidgeting with her fingers, as if looking at her, or anyone, would turn her to stone. Not that it mattered. She was a stone.
"Yes."
"And that was unusual?"
"Of course. She aces every single one of her exams."
"Then why do you think she couldn't keep that up?"
"I don't know. I tried talking to her. Everyday. Sometimes I was angry. Sometimes, I tried to coax her with love. But she never explained."
"And what was your mother's reaction to that? Did she feel furious at her genius daughter for messing up?"
" I know what you want to imply, but no. She was concerned. But not angry. She just told her that it's okay to make a mistake once. She forgave her. Like she forgave her every single time, for every single thing."
The defense attorney, Mr Sean Brown, raised an eyebrow. A young man, with light stubble who looks like he just passed the bar. He was a state appointed defense attorney, that's why.
The prosecutor went on.
"Mr. Hasan, how would you describe your sister? Did she have a history of violence?"
Alayna felt panic rushing through her, she knew she was trapped.
"Ye- yes...She did."
"What happened, miss Hasan? Tell the court what your sister did."
"She kicked a bully in the nuts in her previous school."
"Is that all? I hope you know we have an official record, miss Hasan."
She sucked in a deep breath.
"She..she dragged the bully out of his dorm later that night. And..and carved the shape of a wolf on his arms."
"With a knife? While he was high on weed?"
"With a knife. While he was high."
"Yes M'lord. This girl sitting so calmly here is capable of things beyond our comprehension. How come she dragged a bulky football team captain out of a dorm, ALONE? In cold blood? This is called being BLIND WITH RAGE. She gets possessed by demons when she's outraged-"
"Objection, your honor. Mr O'Reilly is being prejudicial."
"Sustained."
Errum sat there, non chalant. Either she wasn't listening or she made a good show of it.
Mr O'Reilly smiled.
"But isn't it a matter that needs some thought, your honor? With such a fragile frame, she must've needed a lot of strength to drag that bulk of a guy. And that tattoo she carved. No cuss words, no funny business. A WOLF symbol. And we've found a lot of it, the symbol, on her diaries, table, notepads, books, stationeries-"
He went forward to hand a few pictures to the judge.
"Your honor as you can see, this was her symbol. Her very own sign she put on things she OWNED. That bully that day- she wasn't making him pay. She was OWNING him, showing the world her possession-"
"Objection."
"Sustained."
"Very well. Moving on, Ms. Hasan, how would you describe your sister's relationship with your mother, Mrs. Saara Hasan?"
"Mom loved her. With all her heart. Forgave her for all of her mistakes."
"Ms Hasan you sound like Ms Errum made a lot of mistakes often."
Alayna cursed under my breath.
"That's.. actually.. she's just very curious. She keeps doing stuffs unintentionally which are..I don't know.. sometimes wrong..and.. ended up getting in trouble sometimes."
"Can you give us an example, Ms Hasan?"
She raked her brain for anything that isn't remotely violent on Errum's part.
"Like..she once wandered off while chasing a butterfly. Ended up getting lost once."
"Our sources say she wanted to dissect that beautiful butterfly?"
"She just liked to dissect things. She liked to know what's inside them. It was kind of her hobby."
"She liked to dissect? Anything she didn't see inside out before?" A dramatic pause.
"Like Humans?"
All eyes turned to Errum, the defense attorney included. He even forgot to raise objection. The words hung in the air, and Alayna felt the walls were closing in on her. That was her sister they were talking about for God's sake! And..her mother.
But even with all the eyes on her, Errum picked on her nails. Nothing seemed to disturb the eternal bliss in which she was.
Mr O'Reilly cleared his throat and the court room came back to life.
"Ms Hasan, coming back to the question. Errum's relationship with her mother. You said your mom loved her?"
"She did. I don't even remember if she ever scolded her. All she did was adore her."
Alayna's eyes teared up as her mother's face flashed before her. That perfect set of teeth, the wavy brunnette hair, the flawless skin. The kind blue eyes, the ever smiling lips. The prettiest, the kindest.
"That's good to hear but what about Errum, Ms Hasan? Did she..did she love her back?"
Alayna went back to the time when Errum threw a glass aiming at her mom's face. How Errum pushed her everytime she came to hug. How she always tried to talk to Errum and all she ever did was slam the door at her face.
"No. She did not."
And for the first time, Errum's head jolted upwards, and she looked at Alayna with fierce eyes.
