Sean Brown sat in the courtroom, bored. He looked over to his client, Errum, who looked back at him, bored as well.
He was new to his job, and inexperienced, to say the least. He'd kill to get a case this thrilling. So when the state appointed it to him, he was on cloud 9.
But now, he knew there was no way they were winning. This girl refused to speak. She didn't even plead guilty for once. She was just...cold. There was not a single evidence he could gather so far, and the prosecutor went on with all the witnesses and evidences he got.
"Now that we've concluded the cross examination of Ms. Alayna Hassan, I would like to bring some evidence to light. For that may I call my witness, detective Eyzah Malik?" Announced Mr. O'Reilly.
Eyzah took the stand, glancing nervously at Errum.
"Detective Eyzah, you found some amount of white powder under the shelf of Ms. Errum Hassan. Is that correct?"
"Yes, that is correct."
"And did you send those for narcotic evaluation?"
"I did."
"Very well, then. At this time I would like to bring forth the reports of the narcotic test. Turns out, the white powder that was found was an 8-ball of phencyclidine, that was allegedly purchased by Errum that leads us to the conclusion that she took drugs-"
"Objection, lack of evidence. This does not prove Errum has taken drugs. My client could be framed."
"Well, then. I'm sure the defense will not object to a dope test. I would like to request your honor to permit a dope test for Ms. Errum Hassan based on sufficient evidence,"
"Permission granted."
"As we proceed, Ms. Malik. What else did you find from the search of the victim's house?"
"When we dug into the backyard, we found a red oversized raincoat and ashes. Whatever it was, was completely burnt, so forensics could not retrieve sufficient data from the ashes."
"That proves, your Honor, that someone had been upto burning things down. That could only be a murderer's instinct, and considering the fact that who lived in this house-"
"Objection, misleading by circumstantial evidence."
"Sustained."
"That will be all from the prosecution. The defense may go forward with the cross examination."
Sean raised from his seat and sub consciously scratched his head.
"Ms. Malik, would you please tell us more about the red raincoat, please."
"Sure. The raincoat was years old and not bought from any of the local stores that were thoroughly inquired. It was sent for examination but since it was buried underground and muddy because of all the rain from the previous day and possibly wiped clean, no DNA traces could be retrieved."
"That's all, your honor."
Mr. O'Reilly let a small chuckle. Sean Brown was no match for him. He stood up again for his next strike.
"Your honor, May I call my next witness, forensic expert Dr. Harry Styles to the stand?"
Dr. Styles was a well built, good looking bloke who walked with an air of confidence around him. He took a prolonged look at Errum and took the stand.
"Dr. Styles, would you please brief the autopsy report of Mrs. Saara Hassan for us?"
"Sure. From the manner of injuries in Mrs. Hassan's body, it is safe to conclude that she was pushed off from a height, and died of a cardiac arrest during the fall, which, considering her weak heart condition, was very plausible."
"And what about the DNA prints found on her clothes? Did you find a match for them?"
"We did. We ran a test and turns out, the prints we found on the deceased's clothes were," after a dramatic pause he added, "her daughter, Errum's."
Mr. O'Reilly smiled the biggest smile possible.
"Your honor, as you can see, it is very very evident from this, that Ms. Errum Hassan is the one who pushed her mother off her roof! The DNA reports are presented forward. The defense may go forward with the cross examination."
This time, Sean Brown came forward slowly with a confidence that confused O'Reilly himself. Didn't he just prove Errum was the one who pushed Mrs. Hassan?
"Dr. Styles, if you pat me on the back, will your prints be on my clothes?"
O'Reilly's face wrinkled.
"Err..yeah. Yes. There will be." Answered Dr. Styles.
"Thought so," Sean Brown smirked and turned to the judge.
"Your honor, DNA prints can be transferred via a simple touch. Though the prints are Errum's, no doubt in that, it doesn't prove Errum pushed her. It could be from before. After all, she was her mother. That's all, your honor."
O'Reilly slowly stood up again. He couldn't believe this guy was capable of thinking. Didn't he pass the bar yesterday? Never mind, he still had a lot of tricks up his sleeves.
"Your honor, now I'd like to call my next witness and Ms. Errum Hassan's classmate, Mr. Adam Phill to the stand."
Errum jolted her head up.
A fairly handsome boy slowly walked to the stand. He looked pale and had bloodshot eyes, obvious consequence of having a scattered sleep schedule. His emerald eyes shone and his curly hair looked messy.
Sean noted how he looked everywhere but towards Errum, and Errum, for the first time, did not keep staring in a cold manner, but rather...with something in her eyes Sean could not fathom what. Was that hope? Was that happiness? Was that relief?
"Mr. Phill," Mr. O'Reilly addressed, "is it true that the accused, Ms. Errum Hassan had been a classmate of yours?"
"Ye- yes. That's true," He replied softly.
"Would you please tell the court how was Ms. Errum's behavior at school, with her classmates?"
Errum and Adam locked eyes. At that very moment, Adam's eyes lit up in an unknown rage.
"She was crazy. She has always been. A fucking, fucking psychopath. And I have video evidence to prove it!"
Errum, for the first time, let a drop of tear roll down her eyes and her lips quivered as if to say, "Adam" ever so slightly.
