"Search each and every nook and corner. Do not overlook anything. Whatever it is that's out of place, no matter how small, show me. Get going!" Detective Eyzah declared to everyone and no one.
"Wow, detective. Looking stunning today," Detective Jake Harris winked at Eyzah.
"Harris, just because you've been assigned as my co detective in this case doesn't mean you forget our dynamic," Eyzah turned to face him, "I'm the one at charge here, so seal your mouth shut and do your work,"
"Ahh..chill, Malik. I haven't forgotten our dynamic. I'm the cute goofy guy for whom, despite your tough exterior, you have fallen head over hills. But alas! I don't have time for commitment and all, being the Casanova I am," he winked again.
Eyzah rolled her eyes and tried to swallow her anger. This isn't the time to deal with Harris. This man will, forever, remain an asshole. She has to concentrate at the case at hand.
"I swear to God Harris I'm gonna report you to the HR anytime now. What part of 'leave me alone, I'm not single' is that you don't understand?"
"Woah woah girl- I know you ain't single. My very 'internal' source, told me you've been smooshing booties with Styles from forensics?" He lifted one of his eyebrows.
"Wha- who told you that? And God, that's so inappropriate. I don't have time for this. We have a woman allegedly murdered by her own 17 y/o daughter. Something tells me we're in for a long ride. Just get to work!" Eyzah began to walk away.
"Sure sure, by the way, Styles, huh? Good choice, I've heard people peek at his windows to catch a glimpse of his abs," he winked again.
Before Eyzah could respond, someone yelled "Detective!" from the other room.
Both the detectives ran to the room that supposedly belonged to Errum, the accused daughter.
"Detective? We found this..this packet of white powder that from under the shelf of books...could be cocaine," the young recruit Anderson beamed like a kid showing his mother his artwork.
"Send this to the lab for testing. Good work, keep searching,"
Eyzah furrowed her brows. Errum possibly took drugs? This was bad.
Considering she was a troubled high schooler, not implausible at all. Eyzah made a mental note to apply for a dope test.
"Woah, Malik. Look at all this book she reads," Detective Harris pointed at the book shelf.
The titles read "ABC MURDERS", "AMERICAN PSYCHO", "BLOOD MERIDIAN", "THE GIRL NEXT DOOR", "HOGG"...
"I see our good daughter here had quite a taste for books. All this violence had to make her blood thirsty," Harris sighed.
They searched the room for any form of art, writing, especially a diary, but found none.
"Harris, take a good look at the other sister's room, and I'll check the mother's."
Errum walked over to Mrs. Hassan's room, and looked outside the window. She found CSI photographers flashing lights while clicking pictures of the crime scene. She looked around at the pictures of the family hung at the wall. Young Errum and Alayna, laughing and playing with a beautiful Mrs. Hassan. Eyzah knew they never had a father, just like her. It was surreal to look at Errum, happy and beaming, playing with her pretty and loving mother, who she proceeds to kill years later.
Eyzah looked around and found a few packets of cigarettes in the drawers. She remembered the medical reports previously retrieved from the house. Saara Hassan had poor heart, lung and kidney condition. That means she'd been upto smoking, but they didn't find any traces of alcohol around the house. Life as a single mother was hard, maybe she did find relief in smoking. Though..is it possible she was the one who was involved in substance abuse?
She pulled out her phone and texted Detective Jeffords:
"I need Mrs. Hassan's full history. From birth to marriage, children and death. All about her jobs, habits, relations, everything. Call me when you're done."
Once again, Eyzah looked outside. There wasn't much to see at their backyard, but Eyzah squinted her eyes at the ground. A shovel laid feets away from where the soil was a little bumpy in some areas. Errum's stomach churned. She was a woman who always trusted her instincts, and her instincts were fucking screaming now.
Moments later, they all stood outside the house, in the backyard, inspecting the soil.
"The soil has been tampered with," Harris concluded.
"Dig in, we're gonna get to the bottom of it," Eyzah commanded.
Eyzah's phone rang, and she peeked at the screen. Dr. Styles, it read.
"Hey, Eyzah. I'm sorry I completely forgot to mention something about the body. It wasn't that important so it kind of slipped my mind. I know that's no excuse and that was irresponsible of me.."
"Hey, Harry... Just tell me what's it that you've missed. You haven't sent me the final autopsy reports yet anyway, so you can tell me now,"
"Yeah that too. I'll send you the reports by lunch. And the thing is, Mrs. Hassan? She didn't die off falling from the roof,"
"What!"
"Relax, let me explain. She technically died of a heart attack,"
"A heart attack? She died of a heart attack? That happens to 280 people everyday? And you think this isn't fucking important?"
"Calm down, Eyzah. It isn't how it looks. She did die off a heart attack but it wasn't natural death. It was due to the fall, okay? People who have a heart condition causes their death before they hit the ground out of the sheer panic that results into a cardiac arrest. Mrs. Hassan had a lot of issues, especially her heart, lung, kidney were gravely damaged before the incident. We checked with her doctor. If she had a cardiac arrest while falling it's very natural considering her weak heart. It doesn't change the fact that the one who pushed her, killed her. As for proving that, I have sent the DNA samples we found on Mrs. Hassan's clothes to Sally for testing, could you send the daughter's samples to her for the match?"
"Yeah I'll see to it."
"Eyzah? I'm sorry again. It was really irresponsible on my part to leave that out. But I'll include it in my report, that I'll send-"
"It to me by lunch. I know. And it's okay, mistakes happen. Thanks for letting me know. See you for lunch then?" Eyzah smiled.
"Can't wait," Harry smiled from the other end.
