All those lectures on punctuality just for her to be 40 minutes late.
Detective Jake Harris leaned on the bonnet of his car with his 4th coffee of the day in one hand, the other one nicely placed inside his pocket. It wasn't that sunny but he left the sunglasses on, for style purpose. Initially, he wanted to be an actor, with all his good looks and charming personality. Somehow he ended up being the exact opposite. Now that he was here, might as well use his job to look good.
He stole a glance at his watch, waiting impatiently for Eyzah. Apparently her meeting was going a little too well. He chuckled when he remembered the permanent frown itched on her face when she saw him. He wasn't a shitty person in general, but he absolutely loved to pester her. Sometimes that cost him threats of getting a visit to the HR, but both him and Eyzah knew it was all in good humor.
Sometimes he was concerned if he crossed the line somewhere, if she took his words seriously? He mentally prepared himself for an apology when she became her usual self again and everything was back on place.
The sound of tires screeching broke his train of thoughts. Eyzah jumped out of the car, looking attractive in her beige overcoat and straight pants. Her sense of fashion was very dark academia-ish, quite different than Jake's, who never wore anything other than leather jackets.
"I'm sorry for being late. It took me sometime to get access to Kevin and making him speak. Let's get going, I'll fill you in."
Jake led her to an old, single storeyed house to the East of the Hassan's house. Eyzah spotted the CCTV near the front door, and rang the bell.
She could feel his eyes on her, the old man glaring at her from behind the curtain. Eyzah was tired from all the convincing she had to do today, she wasn't ready for one more.
"Police, please open up."
The man did not budge.
"Sir this is an ongoing murder investigation. If you do not co-operate we will have to charge you."
No signs of moving.
"Told ya this guy was a hard nut to crack. I'm positive we're here to waste our precious time doing sweet talk. This man is a crackhead, and he has a gun."
"Well, so do we."
Eyzah looked around and saw multiple CCTV cameras all around the house. She looked at the man but he quickly hid behind the curtain, the end of his gun poking beside.
Manipulation#3 of the day. Eyzah sighed.
"Sir we are also here to discuss the alarming increase of robbers and intruders in the city."
This seemed to catch his attention. Jake looked at Eyzah with curiosity.
"As an old man living alone and secluded, especially in this neighborhood, it's not safe. We want to offer some protection to you, if you don't mind."
The locks clicked and the door slightly parted.
Jake mouthed a 'wow' to her and she greeted the man with a warm smile.
"Good afternoon, Mr.-" she turned to Harris.
"Erm..Mr. Johnson," Jake smiled.
"Yes. Mr. Johnson. Thank you for opening up, we-"
"Badge."
"Huh?"
"How do I know it's not a trap?"
Uhh honey, it is a trap.
"Show me your badges."
Both of them fished their badges out of their pockets and Jake whispered to Eyzah, "Please shove it up where the sun don't shine."
