i've been obsessed with heartstopper for over a week now and i just needed to write this!

rosie and (y/n) are meant to be in their early twenties in the present day bit :)

i've been going out with rosie park since i was 14.

2014 (high school)

"hey, (y/n), rosie is looking at you again,"  my best friend leila whispers. my head shoots around to where i know my long-time crush rosie is sitting and, sure enough, her eyes are right on me. she immediately turns a bright red at being caught and snaps her eyes away, whispering something to her group of friends, but it doesn't stop the rush of butterflies that swarm in my stomach. having her eyes on me always gives me that reaction.

"you should go ask her out,"  my other friend hailey adds.

"i don't know, guys, i don't think she-"

"don't you dare say she doesn't like you," leila interrupts. "i know we all thought she was straight as a flag pole but it's entirely obvious that she has feelings for you."

"i don't want to get my hopes up."

i've had a huge crush on her for about three months now. ever since we met in english class where we were assigned to sit next to each other and we slowly started becoming friends. she didn't seem to care that i'm a flaming lesbian, like so many other people at our school do, and that was amazing to know. i never had any indication that she was even a little homosexual so i tried not to keep my hopes up. my friends seem to have this idea that she likes me but i just can't see it.

"seriously, (y/n)," hailey says. "we can promise you if you went and asked her out she would say yes."

i waved them off, not letting myself entertain the thought. i'll believe it when i see it.

——

later that day in our english class, i notice that rosie seems nervous for something. knowing we have a test coming up i don't think anything of it, until i feel her hand nudge my leg. i turn to look at her and she's smiling cutely but nervously at me.

"can i ask you something?" she whispers, being mindful of our teacher trying to talk to the class.

"sure, what's up?" i ask.

"well, uh, my friend is throwing a party this weekend and i wondered if you wanted to come." i open my mouth to respond and tell her yes, but she continues before i can. "as my date."

my brain short-circuits for a second, her words taking some time to actually sink in. did she just-

"date?" i blurt out.

her eyes widen in surprise as if she wasn't expecting me to question it. "y-yeah, i mean, i've been wanting to...go out with you for a while but i know first dates can be awkward, especially at our age and when you're not straight, so i thought going to a party would be a good start?"

she's starting to ramble because of her nerves and her voice is gradually raising from whispering level so i reach out and cup my hand over her mouth to quiet her. her eyes flick to mine again and i give her a big smile to reassure her.

"i'd love to," i say. i feel her smile under my hand and when i drop it from her mouth, she makes sure to brush her pinky against mine.

"i'll text you about it later," she says. i nod then turn back to pretend i'm listening to the teacher. it probably doesn't look too believable though because of the stupid, giddy smile on my face.
