3rd person POV:

T was 6 and Z was 7 when they first met at a park during a sunny afternoon.

T was playing in the sandbox when he felt a presence looming over him. He looked up to see a boy staring at him curiously. T wanted to be friendly and his mom has always taught him to be nice to others, so he invited him to play. "Would you like to play with me?" The boy nodded and plopped down in front of T. "My name's Aaron and I'm 6 years old What is your name?." The boy stared for a moment as if in a trance but eventually answered. "I'm also Aaron and I'm 7 years old." Ever since that day, the two have been inseparable.

-

It was in middle school when T realized he liked boys and started to feel something for Z that wasn't friendship. The two were hanging out after school and playing video games when Z suddenly put the controller down and faced T. T paused the game and looked at Z in confusion.

"What's wrong, Z?"

Z was smiling brightly when he spoke the words, "I have a girlfriend."

At those words, T felt a pang in his chest but chose to ignore it and play it off as something else.

"Oh, that's great!"

-

Over the next few weeks, T still felt the dull ache in his chest and it seemed to increase whenever he saw Z with his girlfriend. One day, he sat down with his mom and talked to her to see if she could explain why he was feeling this way.

"I don't know why I'm feeling like this. I want to feel happy for him, but it hurts whenever I see them together."

T's mom gave him a sympathetic smile. "Maybe you're just jealous he's not spending as much time with you now?"

T sighed and looked down at his feet. "I don't know, mom, I just feel so confused."

T's mom grabbed his hand and took a breath. "Do you maybe wish you were the one with him instead?"

T lowered his head as tears gathered up in his eyes.

"Honey, it's okay if you like him in that way. I'll love you just the same."

T looked up at his mom with tears running down his cheeks and a watery smile, "Really?"

"Of course."

T pulled her into a tight hug as he cried into her shoulder.

"Thank you, mom. I love you."

-

By the time T was a junior and Z a senior, T came out as gay to Z who was nothing short of accepting. He promised to T that he would accept him no matter what and that they would always be friends. T still wanted to be more than friends but chose to keep those thoughts and feelings to himself. There was no way Z would accept his feelings (or so he thinks) and T didn't want to ruin their friendship.

-

It was 3:00 in the morning and T couldn't sleep. His mind was too awake and full of running thoughts. In 4 hours, Z was going to get up and leave for college. When Z broke the news that he was going away for college, T tried so hard to be happy for him so he put on a fake smile and told him he was happy for him. When he went home the same day, he immediately went to his mother who let him cry on her shoulder until he was reduced to nothing but sniffles.

Now, T was standing outside of Z's house. The time was 3:38 AM. "It's now or never," He said to himself and then called Z. The line rang for a second before it picked up. A voice, laced with sleep spoke on the other end.

"Hello?"

"Hey, it's T."

"Hey, what's up? It's 3 in the morning."

"I'm outside your house and I need to talk to you, please."

"T," he sighed, "can't this wait until the morning?"

"Please, Z, I don't think this can wait."

There was a moment of silence before Z spoke up again. "Okay, hold on."

T waited at the front door for a moment and then the door opened to reveal a sleepy Z.
He stepped to the side to let T in. "This better be important enough to wake me up in the middle of the night."

T took a deep breath, trying to steady his heartbeat. "Can we sit down?"

Z nodded and led them to the living room couch. "So, what's the matter, T? It must be something pretty important if you can't wait until morning."

T smiled nervously. "Sorry, I just needed to get something off my chest."

Z just nodded and held T's hand. "Whatever it is, I'll be there for you, T." T smiled sadly and squeezed Z's hand.

"Z, we've always been so honest with each other but there have been some times when I haven't been completely honest with you." Z furrowed his eyebrows in confusion but urged T to continue. "I felt like I needed to say this before you go because I might never see you again." T took a deep breath before continuing. "Z, I love you."

T looked down at his feet and squeezed his eyes shut. He heard Z's breath hitch and then felt a warm hand lifting his chin. "T, please look at me."

T shook his head. "No, I can't, just tell me you don't feel the same so I can go home."

"Do you think I don't feel the same?" T nodded his head and a few tears slid down his cheeks. "Well, you're wrong, T." T gasped quietly and opened his eyes. "T, I've loved you since we were kids."

"Really?"

Z nodded and wiped the tears off of T's face. "Yes, I even told my mom when I was younger that I'd marry you someday."

T laughed wetly and sniffled. "What now?"

"Well, there's something I've always wanted to do."

"What?" T asked, tilting his head to the side. Z cupped T's cheeks and pressed his lips to his. T froze but quickly melted into the kiss. Their lips fit together perfectly, moving together in sync. They made out for a few minutes before Z pulled away.

"That."

T blushed deeply and hide his face behind his hands. "Come on, T, don't hide now." T slowly removed his hands and looked at Z shyly. Z smiled and held T's hands again.

"That's better."

The two of them talked all night and before they knew it, morning came. T was sad that Z was leaving, but he promised to always visit whenever he could. When it was time to leave, T drove Z to the airport to say goodbye. T held onto Z until it was time for him to board the plane.

"I'm gonna miss you, Z," T sobbed.

Z smiled sadly and cupped his boyfriend's cheeks, giving him a passionate kiss on the lips. "I know, baby, I'm gonna miss you too, but we'll video call every day, okay?"

T smiled and nodded. "I love you, Z."

"I love you, T."

5 years later, the couple is now engaged and living happily together in an apartment, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
