3rd person POV:
“Got it!” T slightly slurred as he presented the obsolete device to Z, who was slumped on the couch, he had now lifted his head to look at the karaoke machine, “I just gotta figure out how to connect it, then we’ll be set.” T added, an excited smile plastered on his face.
Z let out an amused chuckle before throwing his head back against the couch again, “Alright, just don’t take too long.” he hummed. His head felt heavy as the alcohol had already taken full affect, and whatever problems he had were slowly slipping away from his mind. He had been grateful to come over this night, and even more grateful that T had proposed the idea to drink. Not that anything was going bad of course, but he needed to let loose around T, since his crush on him was choking him up every time he saw him.
He overheard the little curses that would leave T’s mouth as he fumbled around with the machine. Z laughed to himself, “Do you need help?” he asked, peeking once again at T, who was surely struggling.
T shook his head, “Nah, I got it. See?” He gestured at the karaoke machine that had been prompted up on top of the small brown coffee table, which had been settled right under the television. Z gave his thumbs up, “Good job, T.”
Just as Z was about to sit up straight to reach for one of the two microphones, he was stopped by a hand, “Wait,” T grinned as he extended his arm to reach for a microphone, “I want to sing a song for you first.”
Catching all of his attention, Z snapped his head up to look wide eyed at T, searching for any hint of a joke—but the latter had been completely serious. Albeit, the exuberant smile on his face was indication that he was too drunk to even comprehend what he was doing.
“Should I record?” Z teased as he pretended to reach for his phone, “This could be great blackmail material, you know.”
“I swear to God if you record, I’ll kill you.” T warned, tone full of playfulness. He’s not sure what pulled him to do this exactly, but he wasn’t regretting it so far.
Z let out a soft laugh, “Alright, alright. Go ahead, I won’t record.” He assured, “I promise.” he added when T squinted at him.
“Good.” T cleared his throat as he pulled out his phone to find the song. Once he found it, he set his phone down and gripped onto the microphone. He looked at Z, both of them staring at each other in awe as the beginning guitar chords played.
—
“I know Z, and I’m telling you, he likes you.” Robaire’s tone had sounded annoyed that day, as the memory echoed throughout Z’s head, “You’re just overthinking.”
“Then why isn’t he making any moves?” The response Z gave was just—He was becoming more and more uncertain each passing day, and it was starting to seriously hurt him.
—
Z’s eyes widened upon hearing the opening lyrics, sung by T’s (not) surprisingly soft voice,
“I wanna be your vacuum cleaner,” T had began swaying to the music, “Breathin’ in your dust.”
“I wanna be your Ford Cantina, I will never rust.”
With every lyric sang, T moved an inch closer, never breaking eye-contact, hoping that his message would get through to Z and that the latter would accept him. Z took a deep breath as he listened.
“Secrets I have held in my heart, are harder to hide than I thought.” T stared deeply into Z’s eyes, just being a mere inches away from him. Being able to see each other much clearly, neither could tell if the creeping blush on their cheeks was caused by the alcohol or this gesture.
“Maybe I just wanna be yours, I wanna be yours, I wanna be yours.” T closed his eyes for a second and in that brief moment, he imagined what life would be like with Z, just as he’d done about a billion times before.
He opened his eyes and leaned in closer as the song was reaching it’s end. Every word, every metaphor, every time the lyric “I wanna be yours” was sung, T meant it.
The ending guitar played, adding intensity the moment, as they both subconsciously leaned in closer to each other.
BAM, the music came to an abrupt stop.
The pair jumped up at the sound, breaking them from whatever was about to happen as they turn their heads to the source of the noise. Realizing what it was, Z broke into a pit of laughter, and T felt a little embarrassed to see that his karaoke machine had fallen on the floor.
“Well that’s embarrassing.” T rubbed his temples as Z continued to laugh, “You’re an asshole for laughing, Z.” he turned to look at Z, becoming more flustered when they had still been inches away from each other’s faces.
“I’m sorry, it was just so unexpected.” Z opened his eyes and stared at T in awe, raising his hand to cup T’s cheek, “What took you so long though?”
“What do you mean?” T was taken aback. Was he missing something?
“What took you so long to confess?” Z asked as he stroked T’s cheek with his thumb, “I was starting to think that Robaire was lying about your crush on me.”
“So why didn’t you make a move if you knew?” T hummed into Z’s touch, still looking at him through drunken eyes.
Z took a second to respond. The red on his cheeks deepened, “I was just scared that he was lying to me. Or that since so much time had passed since then, that you might’ve gotten over it.”
T chuckled softly, “Z, everyday the crush grew. It was starting to get to the point where everybody was noticing but you.”
“You didn’t notice my crush on you either.” Z fired back with a small giggle.
Defeated, T rolled his eyes playfully, “We’re both idiots then.”
There was a silence. T took a deep breath before speaking again,
“Z, I meant every word in that song.” T’s hand hovered on top of Z’s, who was still caressing his cheek. “Every single word.”
Z looked at him with hesitant eyes, “Are you sure? You’re not just drunk?”
“I might be drunk, but I’m still very much in love with you.” T’s face fell flat when he realized that he had said the L word.
In a swift motion, not wanting to regret anything, Z pulled T in with his hand and kissed him. He felt the latter tense up for a brief second, before returning the kiss, deepening it. It felt like something from a movie, it was kind of funny, really.
But Z preferred it this way. T did too.
Z rested his forehead on T’s after they pulled away, catching whatever breath that was lost into the kiss. Their fingers were now intertwined, as if symboling the start of their relationship. Nobody knows what was to come, but one thing was for certain,
“I love you too, T.”
