NEW YORK

Florence Meadows happened to like her life very much.

She'd grown up in New York, Queens to be exact. She'd always been very sociable with those around her and had a lot of friends within her apartment building. Her parents had died when she was nineteen but the girl had been looked after by a wonderful woman called May Parker, who hadn't been much older than herself at the time. She'd learnt to live alone very quickly and when bills started to role in that she couldn't pay for, she got a job.

A dangerous job. She'd told everyone she worked for the Government in security...which wasn't particularly a lie but it wasn't the truth either. Florence worked for a company known as Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, though she thought they needed a more familiar name.

She'd gone through the ranks in time, to the point of standing by the director's side and training recruits. She adored her job and everything that came with it. Every drop of blood felt like she was protecting the earth and she'd always feel pride in herself for that.

She only faltered in her job when she met her husband in 1995, followed by their beautiful daughter in 1997.

Avalyn Stark was so small and innocent to the wall; she was oblivious to who her father was in the world as she opened her hazel eyes for the first time. She was the most caring person you could meet, a girl who chased butterflies around the garden because she wanted them to have friends.

Tony Stark loved his daughter with all he had. Avalyn Stark kept him grounded. Even as he was kidnapped in Afghanistan, he thought of her and his wife. He thought of the face of his eleven-year-old daughter who'd only just begun to understand what her last name was for her. As he was rescued and stepped off the plane, no one dared to tell him the news.

No one dared tell him that Florence Meadows was lying in a hospital bed with a bullet wound, a crashed SUV and the empty seat Avalyn Stark left behind. Nothing was left but the note inscribed in messy handwriting.

We know what you did, Meadows and now your daughter shall pay for it.
