AVENGERS COMPOUND
NEW YORK
"Five years ago, I had a heart attack."
Secretary Ross was someone Avalyn had never met before nor did she get a good feeling from him when she did. He was a tall man, with grey hair and an unamused look on his face as he stared at all of the Avengers.
"I dropped right in the middle of my back-swing. Turned out it was the best round of my life, because after 13 hours of surgery and a triple bypass...I found something 40 years in the Army had never taught me: Perspective." Secretary Ross claimed, looking around at them all.
Avalyn had a feeling she wasn't going to like this man.
"The world owes the Avengers an un-payable debt. You have fought for us, protected us, risked your lives...but while a great many people see you as heroes, there are some . . . who would prefer the word 'vigilantes'." Secretary Ross continued.
"And what word would you use, Mr. Secretary?" Natasha questioned.
"How about 'dangerous'?" Secretary Ross offered. "What would you call a group of US-based, enhanced individuals who routinely ignore sovereign borders and inflict their will wherever they choose and who, frankly, seem unconcerned about what they leave behind?"
Secretary Ross activated a screen behind him and Avalyn felt her eyes be drawn to his.
"New York."
A Chitauri leviathan. Terrified citizens. A soldier firing a gun. The Hulk smashes into a building and sent a dust cloud to engulf the camera. Avalyn had never seen it before and she couldn't begin to imagine what that was like for them.
"Washington DC."
The three Insight helicarriers, firing on each other. The destroyed Triskelion. A helicarrier crashing into the Potomac and throwing up a massive wave, engulfing citizens and the camera. Something Avalyn was also not present for.
"Sokovia."
That one hit close to home and Avalyn found herself under the watchful eyes of her parents and Pietro as she ran a hand over her scarred stomach, though the shirt covered them. She still remembered the screaming as the city rose and the buildings collapsing around them.
