AVENGERS COMPOUND
UPSTATE NEW YORK

Pain was a funny thing; pain was something Avalyn Stark was used to and by this point in her life, her nerves had adapted to deal with pain in their way. She healed the vast majority of the time: electrification and lightning only made her stronger. Lead harmed her and created scars, the skin allergic to its touch. Her heart rate was three times the standard human, making it impossible for regular equipment to keep up.

Her body burnt through pain meds within ten minutes, rendering them useful unless she was left fully sedated on the tablets made to slow down her heart rate: which didn't last long either. The Doctors did their best and then it was a waiting game.

Then, in the middle of the night — 3:12am to be exact — Avalyn Stark groaned.

Her father, an insomniac for years, had been at her side for the past thirty-nine hours with a stubborn refusal to move. His wife, the young woman's mother, had officially given into sleep after hours of sitting next to her daughter's bed.

"Ava?" Tony whispered, immediately standing up.

"I want a cheeseburger."

"Yeah I bet you do," Tony smiled, tears in his eyes. "That was...dreadful of you to scare us like that."

"It's in my nature to be mysterious," Avalyn joked, letting Tony take a hold of her hand. "Pietro, Clint and the boy...are they...?"

"Perfectly safe thanks to you," Tony assured. "God, what were you thinking?"
