Sam
At six am, I rolled over in my bed, still not asleep after waking up at one. I groaned and rolled out of the bed and crawled into the shower. I tried to let the warm water wake me up, but it didn’t do much. After my shower, I didn’t even bother with coffee or breakfast, I simply dressed in my gym clothes, grabbed my gym bag and phone, and left, locking up after myself.
I ran down the stairs, not passing any of my neighbours. Actually, now that I thought about it, I didn’t know any of my neighbours. But I shrugged it off. The less people who are close to me, the better. I didn’t bother going into Starbucks, and I just went straight past it, and around to Popeye’s. I just needed to get my hands n a punching bag after last night. I needed to calm down, to relax. As I reached the front door, my phone started vibrating and playing ‘Shoot To Thrill’. I rolled my eyes, waving at Colm as I went to put my bag down on a bench, taking my time and listening to the song before answering.
‘What’s up Tony?’ I propped the phone up, between my shoulder and ear, and took my straps out of my bag. Colm laughed at my attempt to multi-task, and I playfully glared at him.
‘Actually Sam, it’s Steve.’ I shrugged, not phased. More surprised. I would have thought that he would have been too busy to call me again.
‘Hey! What’s up?’ I asked cheerfully, trying to hide the tired weariness in my voice.
‘I just wanted to check that you were ok.’ He said sweetly. I smiled, strapping up my knuckles in my white tape.
‘Thanks. Yeah, I’m fine. Sleep works wonders.’ I joked, making my way over to Colm, who was smiling cautiously at me. I knew that he wanted to tell me to go home and rest, but, well, he was too afraid of me to try to kick me out. He smiled warmly at me, concern still clear in his eyes, before he scanned the room as he normally did.
‘Alright then...’ Steve trailed off awkwardly, sighing. I could just picture him running a hand through that gorgeous blonde hair of his. ‘You will call us if you need anything, won’t you?’ he asked. I ‘awed’ inwardly at how adorable he was.
‘Definitely.’ I replied, smiling. It was nice to know that someone cared, for once. At the same time, I chastised myself for thinking that. People had cared in the past, but I had to push them away because of the danger I was putting them in.
‘Ok... Then, I’ll see you ‘round Sam.’
‘See ya!’ I replied before hanging up, smirking. I tossed my phone over to my bag and said hi to Colm, before walking towards my usual punching bag. As I made my way there, Mark stepped out of nowhere and went at me with a right hook. I dodged, my eyes wide, automatically hitting him hard in the stomach with an undercut. He bent over, groaning. I sighed, pulling him up by the shoulder. I looked him dead in the eyes, one of which was squinting, the whole area around it swollen after what I did to defend myself the day before.
‘You really shouldn’t have pissed me off.’ I said, before hitting him, hard, in the face with a right hook of my own. He crumpled to the ground and I smirked, shaking my head at his stupidity as I stepped over him.
