THUD! THUD! THUD! I woke up out of my troubled sleep, to hear the dull thud as a body hit the ground. Seconds later, I heard the same thing and immediately identified it. A silencer of a gun. I didn’t need two guesses to know who it was, and unwanted tears of fear began rolling down my face. I jumped as someone screamed and started crying, only to be silenced by another shot. I searched in the dim light, leaning over, and unplugged my heart monitor from the wall, and detached everything else. I heard the five sets of footsteps coming closer and threw the sheets off my legs.
I cried silently as I remembered, and hopelessly willed my legs to move. I heard another shot and jumped. Suddenly, my legs swung off the side of the bed, sending me crashing to the floor. It was odd though, even though they moved, it didn’t feel like I had moved them. It was more like something had pushed them than my moving them. But at that second, I didn’t care. I heard a light groan, I hoped from one of their victims, praying that they were alive. I dragged myself through the darkness, across the slick floor, to the corner of the room and hid behind the cabinet.
I heard footsteps come closer, before stopping, and again I willed myself not to be seen. I prayed that they would see a perfectly empty room. I peeked out through the darkness at the five men with heavy artillery. I couldn’t see some of them in the faltering light, as it cast dark shadows scuppering across their features, plunging their faces into darkness. They were all tall, and well built, and I assumed that they were wearing body armour, only I couldn’t tell. But I could vaguely see some in the fading, crepuscular fluorescent light. I recognised three of them from my time undercover with the FBI. The front man had murdered my partner.
‘She’s not here. They must have got the room wrong.’ One said. Another let out a growl of frustration and they all moved on, their heavy artillery guns at the ready. I stayed there, frozen and unwavering all night. At six a.m., new nurses came on the scene and screamed at whatever sight beheld them. I pulled myself up by the cabinet, still wishing not to be seen, and stayed like that, supported only by the strength of my hands. I watched as they rushed around, putting people on gurneys and rushing them off to what I presumed was either the O.R. or the morgue.
At about eight a.m., the Avengers came rushing in, looking frazzled in their ‘normal’ clothes. They filed in and took a look around the room. The sheets were thrown off the bed as I had left them, and the drip had been knocked over. Tony growled in frustration and Steve ran a hand through his hair. I relaxed, but was confused at the same time. The air seemed to shift around them and they all turned to look at me as my hands slipped off the side of the cabinet and I fell to the ground, my legs doing nothing to support me. I hit my head against the wall and sighed.
‘Ow.’ I grumbled, rubbing the back of my head. Five heads turned to me and stared in disbelief. I saluted them, wincing as shockwaves of pain shot through my back.
‘Aloha.’
Tony looked from the bed, to me and back again a few times before frowning. He took a breath to say something, which I guessed was how I got to the other side of the room.
‘I pushed myself off the bed and crawled over here to hide.’ I explained before reaching my hand out to them. ‘As much fun as being on the floor is, will someone please help me back to the bed?’
Steve immediately stepped forward and scooped me up into his arms, bringing me over to the bed, gently setting me down. I looked up at them.
‘What the hell happened?’ Tony asked, gesturing to outside the door, where yet another gurney and patient were being rushed by.
