I kept a vigil beside Lexi’s bed for the next few days, waiting for her to heal enough to be pulled out of her induced coma. She had been hurt so badly, that Bruce had to give her a special healing serum, like the modified super-soldier serum he had given me, only not as strong. I didn’t move from my post at her bedside, neglecting my other duties. She was my main priority, but that didn’t mean that I wasn’t aware of everything going on around me.

SHIELD was steadily becoming busier; people rushing and milling about the place. They walked, jogged and sometimes ran past the infirmary in their drones.I also knew that it was because of what happened. SHIELD were acting like the cops; hurt one of their own, and they’ll retaliate without holding back.

But that was the thing. Alex and RHOKA wouldn’t have hurt Lexi if they didn’t have a strategy behind it, and I was pretty sure that SHIELD was playing directly into their hands. I hated the idea, but I was almost certain that I was right. if there wasn’t a strategy, Lexi would be dead right now. I ran a hand through my hair, trying to clear it of bad thoughts. I had to focus on Lexi right now, to be here for her when she woke up. I had to give her the support that I never got.

I heard footsteps outside the door, breaking the almost perfect silence. I looked up as someone came into the room and sighed on seeing Tony. He looked at me apologetically, before walking over and sitting beside me. I could see that he was tired. He looked like he just wanted to go home to Pepper and fall asleep in her arms, forgetting the world for a while. I knew exactly what he was feeling. I just wanted to melt into Steve’s arms and have him chase away all my worries like he always did.

I just wanted to have my old, simple life back, with the exception of keeping Steve and the other Avengers.

‘How is she?’ he asked quietly, not wanting to break the silence that had resided since my ears got used to the steady beeping of the heart monitor. I sighed, my eyes trailing across Lexi’s bruised, yet peaceful, sleeping face. She was so pale. So pale. I ran a hand across my face, trying to rub away the worries. She needed confidence, not worries.

‘Better. I can see a difference in her; she’s starting to heal up. But I don’t know.’ I replied quietly and honestly. She was slowly, but surely beginning to heal up. Bruce hadn’t held back with any information; she was healing fast, but there was a high risk that there would be some psychological damage. I knew that there probably would be, I just hoped that there wouldn’t. I didn’t want her living a life like mine; tortured twenty-four hours daily, by memories that one couldn’t escape.

‘She’ll pull through.’ he said with confidence. I took a shaky breath and let my head hand down as i leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. Tears sprung to my eyes and I looked up at him.

‘How do you know?’ I asked, my voice weak and child-like; exactly how I felt. I needed some reassurance. I had already lost so much, I couldn’t lose my best friend, my sister as well. He looked up and smirked at me.

‘Because I’m a genius, duh.’ he then walked over from his position in the doorway and sat on a chair  beside me.

‘Sam, do you want to know what happened while you were out, after the elevator crash?’ I didn’t confirm or deny either, not knowing myself. Tony sighed and continued.

‘Everybody doubted that you’d pull through, except for us. We all had seen a strength in you, and believed that that strength would get you through. And guess what.’ he said, a small smirk lighting up his face.
