Steve chuckled, silhouetted against the bright light behind him.

'Wakey, wakey, sleepyhead.' he said softly.

For a moment, I was convinced that I was dead. The last thing I could remember was blacking out at the warehouse. I rolled onto my back, away from Steve. I took a shaky breath and closed my eyes tightly. Steve sighed beside me.

'It's happened again. Hasn't it?' he asked softly. I nodded slowly, trying to pull my mind back to the present. I had been good recently, getting better at staying in the present. For so long, I had been stuck there, in the warehouse, scared stiff. I couldn't pull my mind back without Lexi's help. But I had been good recently, and now I had relapsed. Steve sighed and pulled me into his arms, chasing away the past. I sighed and relaxed against him.

'You must have some type of magic.' I hummed, half to myself. Steve chuckled and kissed my cheek.

'No. I don't need magic. I have you.' I smiled and blushed, entwining our fingers together. I sighed and he wrapped his warm arms around me.

We sat like that for a while, simply comfortable in each others' presence. Eventually, we got up and walked out, into the living area, where Pepper, Tony and Bruce were chatting over coffee and breakfast. I smiled as we walked up to them. Steve's arm snaked around my waist, pulling me closer. I smiled at the action, loving the comfort of his warmth. We socialised for a while over breakfast, before I left to have a shower.

I let the warm water wash away my fears and worries. I turned off the water and climbed out of the shower, drying myself before wrapping a bathrobe around me and walking out, into the bedroom.

As I walked across the room, I looked out the window, at the glittering New York skyline. I dried my hair with a towel as I turned to face the window, finding peace in the calm beauty of the buzzing city. I continued to watch as I lifter a brush from the dresser, and directed it to my hand.

I admired the scenery as I slowly brushed my hair, letting my head empty itself of all thoughts. I noticed a shining speck, off in the distance. At first I thought it was a plane, but on further inspection, I could see that it was flying between the buildings.

I would have said that it was a helicopter, but as it moved closer, I saw no rotors.

My next thought was that it could be one of Tony's other suits, maybe Rhodey, but I soon realised that not only was it too big to be a suit, but it was the wrong shape. It was wide, and almost triangular in shape. I realised too late what I was looking at.

It was one of the Chitauri's jet-things, like I had seen on TV and in pictures. Something flashed at the front of it and time seemed to pass at double its normal speed.

The large panoramic window of the room was blown to pieces by a silent bomb, and I was thrown backwards, in a shower of glass, by the force of the blast. I was stunned as I hit my head against the ground on impact, having been flipped over like a pancake.

I looked up in shock as the Chitauri driver jumped off the jet, being thrown into the room. His alien face held a ghost of a sneer as he bared his pointed teeth at me, stalking forward, and drawing a dagger from a sheath at the base of his back.

The air shimmered before him, and he stopped dead in his tracks as a dark-haired, pale man materialised before him, his cape flowing out behind him as he thrust his pointed golden sceptre-spear into the Chitauri's stomach.

It screeched in pain, before crumpling to the ground as the man withdrew his weapon. I heard the others reach the door and stop in shock.

Loki turned around slightly and smirked at the others, before winking at me and saluting me. He disappeared from sight and I let out the breath I didn't realise I had been holding.

I slowly started getting up, my eyes glued to the dead alien on the floor, his red-black blood slowly seeping into the cream carpet. Someone ran to my side and helped me up as Steve ran out, to the space which Loki had stood in, not moments before.

I turned and looked into Bruce's concerned eyes, and snapped out of my stupor. I shook my head, placing my hand over his, which held my arm.

'I'm fine.' I said, nodding at him, before starting to pick the glass out of my hair. 'Really, I'm fine.' I assured him, feeling more like myself after the little shock.

Steve whirled around as I tried to pick the rest of the glass out of my hair.

'What did he do?' he asked, his voice hard. I knew he was talking about Loki, and I knew that they wouldn't like the truth. But I wasn't going to lie to them. I ran a hand through my hair, shaking the last of the glass out of it as I took a deep breath, steadying myself.

'He saved my life.'
