Steve
We were all a little shocked as we brought Sam back to Tony’s. I wearily kept an eye on Lexi, she still hadn’t explained what she had done to Sam, and honestly, she scared me a little. She was quite like Sam in that way. They both had a powerful presence, which neither seemed to realise, which was both intimidating and awe-inspiring at the same time. As we slowly went up through Stark Towers in the elevator, I looked down at Sam, who seemed to be sleeping peacefully in my arms. I sighed as we came to Tony’s living quarters, and brought Sam straight to her room, the others following close behind.
I laid her down gently on the bed, pulling the covers up around her, before sitting on the bed, watching as she seemed to sleep soundly. It was almost too easy to believe that, and all too easy to forget the darkened Sam whose anger and power had almost taken control of her. I fought back a shiver as the image of Sam, power almost rolling off her shoulders, her eyes dark and black.
‘What did you do to her?’ I asked Lexi, not moving my eyes from Sam, and surprised as my voice came out harsher than I meant it to. I guess I was scared; scared for what could have happened to Sam, and scared of what she could have done, what she was. I was only just beginning to wrap my head around this whole “telekinesis” thing, and now she could create fire too? She was quickly becoming something much more powerful than I ever could have imagined, and I didn’t know what to think. Lexi sighed behind me and I turned to see her taking her hair down and running a hand through it, the stress evident on her face.
‘If I’m going to tell you, you’re going to have to let me explain first, and I promise, no lies or avoiding truths, ok?’ she said, looking from Tony, to Bruce, before her clear blue eyes settled on me. Her eyes pleaded with us softly, I guess she really did want to explain. Now as I watched her, I saw her for the young, inexperienced twenty-six year-old that she truly was. It was odd, even though Sam was four years her younger, she had never appeared to me as inexperienced, and while sometimes unsure, never unconfident. Bruce and Tony nodded, as did I, we wanted to hear what she had to say.
She shifted her gaze warily to Sam, lying peacefully asleep, before looking back to us. ‘Maybe we could go out to the living area? I don’t think it would be a good idea if we woke her if one of you were to get angry or annoyed at me.’
I nodded, seeing the sense in the idea. The others turned to leave the room. I placed a soft kiss on Sam’s forehead before following. We sat down on the couches and Lexi sighed, shifting nervously, before she began explaining. She sighed, wringing her hands together as she studied the various lines on the ceiling, probably looking for a place to start. She sat on the armrest of one of the couches, keeping us all in her direct line-of-view; something else that she had in common with Sam, who used to do that. But now, thankfully, she was more comfortable around us, unlike Lexi.
‘I was born in Phoenix, which is known for having one of the highest levels of naturally occurring radiation in the US.’ she started. That was new information to me, but Tony and Bruce nodded. I guess that if they knew it, it had to be true. Especially seeing as Bruce knew it. Lexi sighed and looked down at her hands, rubbing them together, evidently uncomfortable. I noticed her shiver slightly, before she shook herself and continued with her story.
‘When I was about six, I started hearing things. Almost like people were whispering in my ears constantly, hundreds of them. It used to wake me up sometimes at night, or get me into trouble both at home and at school. My mom thought I was showing early signs of schizophrenia, but my dad dismissed it, saying that it was natural for a kid to have imaginary friends.’ she sighed and smiled sadly. ‘It didn’t take me long after that to realise that I was hearing peoples’ thoughts.’ she said, sighing. She continued wringing her hands together, frowning slightly as she looked down at them.
