Sam

The next day I spent lounging around at Stark Towers. The girls had been sent home after the incident at Kings Dominion, and Tony, Steve, Clint, Bruce and Natasha had been called into talks at SHIELD. I sighed and leaned my head back against the couch. Pepper was off doing CEO stuff, so I was left to myself.

My mind was beginning to wander, to fill up with unpleasant thoughts and memories. I sighed and stood, needing to do something with my time and knew just what to do. I got up, went into the kitchen, made a cup of tea and brought it with me down to the lab.

I grabbed one of the STARK holopads and brought up the scan of my wrist. I sighed, looking at the scan of the complex chip. How they even managed to get it into my wrist, I don’t know. I looked at the scan and noticed something. The hooks which latched it onto my nerves were just that; hooks. They were open at one end.

An idea popped into my head; A crazy, insane, mad idea, which might just work.

I quickly moved, grabbing a scalpel and the other things I would need. I quickly opened up my wrist and went to work. My theory was that whatever controlled the chips, made them latch on tighter to my nerves, sending out the shock. But that if I detached the hooks, then they couldn’t latch on tighter, and I could remove them.  I carefully began the operation, sliding a thin metal hook under the chip, using one of Tony’s machines, a 3D scanner, to give me a constant picture of what it was that I was doing.

Using the scan, I guided the hook to the first of the loops, grabbing it. I slowly and carefully began pulling it back, away from the nerve. Once that loop was facing straight down, I moved on to the next one. It was a tedious and strenuous task, but I was managing. About forty minutes later, I had removed the last hook, and grabbed the tweezers.

I nervously grabbed the chip and slowly began levering it up, until it was at a forty-five degree angle. I got nervous at that point, and ripped the chip away, wincing as it ripped through an artery. I gasped as blood began pooling at my wrist, and grabbed for something to staunch the bleeding. I quickly wrapped a bandage around my wrist, not paying my heed to the fact that it turned from white to red in a matter of seconds.

I opened up my other wrist and went to work again. It was a lot harder trying to remove the chip from my right-hand wrist, as my left hand wasn’t as strong. I felt like I was playing Operation. Only instead of simply hearing a buzz noise and seeing a red light, this would actually shock me, and it would hurt. A lot.

I breathed out slowly and continued with my work. It did take longer, a lot longer. Almost two hours later, I was finally removing the last hook from my nerves. My left wrist hadn’t stopped bleeding, and the bandage was now useless. Blood dripped steadily down my arm and onto the floor. It was painful, incredibly so. How people did that to themselves on a regular basis, I couldn’t fathom.

I unhooked the last hook and grabbed the tweezers, and began quickly lifting the chip. But I hadn’t straightened out one of the hooks. As I lifted it, it caught on both an artery and a nerve. Pain shot through my body, crushing, excruciating pain. I gritted my teeth and ripped the chip out just before my legs gave out and the world turned to black.
