"Wait....so your just going to leave?"
Sam looked flabbergasted at my decision. His reaction was almost satisfying.
"Jason if you leave, you won't be able to defend your self come the senate gathering, they will-"
"Place a temporary Praetor in my absence, yes. They can't outright strip me of the title." I responded to him.
"How can you be sure?" Gwen asked.
I extended my hand at the empty table in the center of principa building. Sam extended out his arm dramatically. "My guy, there is nothing on that table."
And in fact, there was almost nothing in the building itself. The legion rebuilt the Principa building in a matter of days, after the fire was brought under control. Usually, it would be refurbished just as quickly, but the students of Minerva decided against refurbishing it for me.
"We want you to decide how to refurbish it, Jason." The head counselor of the group told me a few hours ago. "You increased our budget, so it's the least we can do for you. Let us know and we'll help you create your dream headquarters."
Now the main floor of the Principa was nearly empty. Bleached white stone in all directions and marble black floors, it really did look like a bank now.
"No, but I spent hours reading on the laws and code of conduct in New Rome. The law prohibits the senate from being able to appoint whatever Praetor they want, ultimately the entire legion decide their Praetor. The Senate can appoint a temporary Praetor in the event one becomes inactive. Whether for injury or-"
"For a quest." Reyna finished. She sat on the steps that would have led to the Praetor chairs, playing with Argentum and Aurum. She tossed a play mouse and Argentum caught it, tearing it a part with its golden teeth.
"Okay first of all," Sam shook his head. "We all have dyslexia and you read that much? I need a certificate of completion or something to believe that. And what exactly are you looking for? Friends? Enemies? What does that mean exactly? He was a robot for crying out loud."
Reyna patted the butts of Aurum and Argentum. "But he never lied. The dogs didn't attack him."
Sam scoffed. "Maybe there are different rules when robots interrogate other robots. But that still doesn't clear up what we are looking for down there. And what about the assassin?
We were silent. Unsure as to what we were looking for exactly or how to address the issue with the assassin.
"What about Daedalus's workshop?" Reyna offered. "Circe told me some stories about the inventor. She had a hand in constructing a workshop at the center of the maze."
Gwen crossed her arms. "Yeah, maybe from there we can have some control over the Labyrinth. We can use that to our advantage and take the fight back to Justice and Luke."
I sighed. "And the assassin is going to have to wait. Luke probably sent them through the labyrinth anyways. We can find the assassin and put him behind bars now, but that won't stop Luke from sending another one."
Sam crossed his arms. "If assassins are here, your just going to let you boi deal with them on his own?"
Gwen drank some water. "Sounds like you don't want him to go, because that will mean you have to stay here and do your job."
The three of us stared at Sam. He had no cringy joke or zinger prepared, he looked.... Panicked.
But he tried to play it cool. "That's not the problem at all. But...... but what about my exhibitions? I can't lead my squads from here."
