As soon as our lips parted I saw how deep the lines in between his brows knot as if I caught him off guard when his name escaped from my lips. His lips thinned, and his large warm hands that were cupping my cheeks slid down the mattress caging me in between. I held his gaze and my eyes staring at his with full of unanswered questions.
"Why did you change-" I started to question him but was cut off when he raised his thumb and caressed my lips. His thumb's smooth pad ran against my chapped lips.
"Not now, kababalik mo lang sa akin." He said, his voice sounded so soothing that the aches that I was starting to feel we're being lulled to a painless numbness that tranquilized my wound. His other hand reached to the nightstand while the one on my cheek slid down, and cupped my waist seemingly to support me as he hand me a glass of water. "Drink, you've been asleep for quite some time. You must be thirsty." He continued and assisted me by holding most of the glass weight because my body still felt so exhausted even though I'd been sleeping for a while.
I took a few sips before shaking my head, gesturing to him that I no longer want to drink the water. He gently pulled away from the glass from my lips and placed it on the nightstand. His hand on my waist tightened as he worriedly stared at me. His eyes were intensely gazing at me as if he were trying to memorize all the details of my face. His eyes traveled from my brows to my nose, down my lips, then back to looking at me with that same gaze.
My hand slowly slid from his arms to his chest, then up to his cheek cupping it lightly as my hand trembled because my limbs felt like it wasn't put to use for a time being. The stubbles in his cheeks tickled my thumb. He let go of my waist, grabbed the hand that was caressing my cheek, and held it to his lips before giving it a light kiss.
"Why'd you do it? Why did you take that bullet for me?" He asked while he held my hand near his chest. His eyes searching answers in mine, and I held his stare as intensely as he does.
"Why not? Asawa mo 'ko. It is what I promised on that altar when I married you." I replied truthfully, but he released his hold on me, and stood in front of the window, looking out at the vast land of his warehouse. He rested his hands on the banister of the window revealing the deep lines of muscles in his biceps.
"Bullshit!." He throatily whispered and tilted his head towards me. "Don't talk as if you weren't forced to marry me. You knew your situation, you knew that you could've fled if something were to happen to me." His voice rising, and full of emotions. "So I'm asking again. Why. Did. You. Take. That. Bullet. For. Me?." He said with his gritted teeth as if every word were said with punctuation. His breath ragged as he tried to calm himself down but to no avail because from where I am I can see how the veins in his neck popped, and his jaw was so tightly set that I could almost hear the gnashing of his teeth.
