Ivan
The sun was blazing. The days seemed to get hotter the farther we traveled. But all my eyes were on was the crowd. It looked like her. It looked so much like her. My brows furrowed in frustration.
But it wasn’t her. In fact, it was a boy. He had short hair, was as dirty as the regular traveling folk you see, and had an overall different aura to him. Yet his face, even his expression. It was hers. I couldn’t get the look of loathing out of my mind.
He hadn’t spotted me, of course. I was sitting steadily a few feet back from the prince, and no one was looking in my direction. All eyes were on the majestic foreigner prince who would eventually be connected to them through Addison.
I wasn’t sure about Prince Anthony at first. Though, it might’ve been because of my protective attitude towards Addison. But now, I knew who he was. He was a man fit to be king one day.
My thoughts switched back to the stranger I’d seen earlier.
If it was Addison, surely she would’ve seen me. No. No, it wasn’t her. I was desperate, my mind wanted to see her so bad it made up an illusion of her. The person was even a boy! I tightened my fists on the reins and looked forward at the back of the prince’s head.
He had seen him too. Though, probably because of the small commotion the boy had caused. I assumed the boy had gone feint from this darned weather. I expected a sunburn by evening.
A question flew through my mind at the boy’s mannerisms towards the prince. He wasn’t very happy to see him. Yet, he was at the front of the crowd. I would’ve thought he wanted to pelt rocks or something of the sorts at him had he not left in a hurry.
The loud roar of clapping interrupted me from my thoughts. I pushed my horse onward as the prince began to pace ahead. I had ignored the small speech that was filled with everything that these citizens needed and wanted to hear. But the prince was very stern with his concern of lying. If I were to quote him correctly he’d said: “The people are not animals you woo with false words, it is the truths that bind them to you and create the trust and respect that is rightfully earned.” I agreed with him to an extent. But, sometimes the public had a need for false assurance.
Today was a day I had lived many times. At least, it was like those times. I couldn’t have counted the dozens upon dozens of festivals I’d went to as a child leading up to now. My father never wanted an eye to forget me. He forced me to attend even the smallest celebration, though of course I would never go to one of peasant value. He was extremely delighted when he learned of my friendship with Addison and urged me to latch on to her brothers and “make something of the granted seed”.
I very much enjoyed every single one of the royal princes, but they weren’t the same as Addison. I felt myself smiling as we came to the end of our walk.
We hopped off our horses and headed to an area of shade as the festivities began. I walked up to the prince and patted him on the shoulder. “Well done, Prince Anthony.”
He turned around and gave me a knowing grin, “You didn’t listen to one word, did you? And I must establish this once more, call me Anthony, Ivan.”
