A loud burst of clapping echoed around the walls. The Chief slammed his beefy hands together just three times before stepping towards me with a gleam in his eyes.
“Bravo, bravo,” He was only a few feet from me now,
“And do you still not know why you’re here?” Without waiting for my answer he continued, taking a sharp turn sideways and composing his body in contemplation, “Well it’s obvious isn’t it? The stones. The Imperial Stones.”
A click set off in my head, positioning my face into dull annoyance. I should’ve known. Why else would they want us here? Why else would Charles kidnap us? The only things that made us important were the stones. At least, to them it was.
I set my jaw and waited until he was back near me again until I spoke, “Do you really think that Ella would give up her stones for a henchman and a servant boy?” A sharp laugh escaped me and my hair flew out of my face as I tilted my head back.
I grimaced proudly at him, “You do not know who you’re dealing with.”
As if in retaliation he let out a replica laugh much deeper and louder than mine. He closed the last few steps and grabbed my chin, pulling my head up to face him. His mouth opened up to spit his words in my face but something stopped him, his eyes deadened for just a moment before he jerked his head towards the two guards.
“Leave us.”
Their ears turned red at his tone and they scrambled clumsily out of the room, taking only seconds to open the heavy doors and then close them with a harsh scraping.
Once they were gone the Chief took a step back from me, a knowing smile planted heavily on his face. He turned his back, fully aware that I was unchained, and casually walked a couple steps before turning abruptly and stopping.
“Have you heard any news about the princess?”
Realization flooded through me, my face dropped and my eyes widened. A flare of butterflies burst into my stomach this time edged with fear, not excitement. I slid my foot back a step, watching the growing satisfaction appear on the Chief’s face. My heart grew heavy and a lump was forming at the base of my throat.
“I really do wonder what happened to her. A pity isn’t it? It would be horrible if she fell into the wrong hands. What if something dreadful came about? Our precious princess; what would we do?”
“Y—… Yes, that would be appalling. I bet the one who would do such horrible things to her would be tortured and executed. The vile beast would be put to death as he should.”
He clucked his tongue at me, gradually moving forward. “What an intense mind for such a young lad.” He was right in front of me now, just a few inches away. “I disagree though. I think that if the mastermind could get away with taking the princess away, then he could get away with... Well, whatever he did to her. Who knows? She might not ever go back.”
I jumped back from his hot breath, his mouth breathing putrid odor down my face. Almost instantly he grabbed my arms, pulling me forward, a disgusting smirk still latched onto his face.
“Where do you think the princess is? Because I think she’s nearer than we thought, I think she’s very close indeed.”
Pulling me forward, he took both of my wrists in one hand and clucked his tongue again, his eyes glazing over my body, “So underfed, let alone dirty. I really do need to hire better services, the least you would need is a nice warm bath. How does that sound?”
