Leaning back in the horse saddle I watched all three of them have a private discussion. Though if you looked at me you could probably tell I wasn’t actually paying attention. My eyes were glazed over with thoughts on my aching legs and sore back. The last few days weren’t very comforting. In fact, they made me run by them while they rode on horses like pompous little nobles. I wouldn’t look at them until dinner.
That was, if you could call it dinner. Dry berries and unseasoned meats got old by the second day. The pains of this adventure were already getting to me. I couldn’t help but dread what was ahead. But one thing is for sure though, I was not regretting it. I assured myself daily how fulfilled I felt by doing this.
But some things were just something that I would never get used to. Like not bathing on a daily basis. I washed myself in the stream every time we were near one but I couldn’t help but feel discontented without my perfumes. It did seem slightly petty. I realized how much the simple things were the most loved.
I was also feeling a little home sick. I missed the garden; the wild vines twisting around the stone walls, creeping around the corner until it they were cut off by someone. The smell of roses were almost haunting in my mind, it was a beautiful kind of memory.
I missed Tony and his meals. The thought of buttered sweet cakes or roast beef dripping with juices made my mouth water. I missed my brothers, even when they were being annoying or picking on me. I even missed my mother and father. Though they betrayed me in more ways than they knew and I tried to deny the feeling as much I could, there was a longing to embrace my mother’s clean smell and be scratched by my father’s ever-growing beard from a hug.
I pushed the thoughts away and twisted my face into determination. I was happier here. Well, my mind was.
My ears perked up from the mention of something familiar and I focused on Ella, Lance, and Collin.
“Did you find another stone?” I asked a little loudly, trying to draw their attention.
Lance looked up and gave me a short stare before returning to their obviously intent conversation. I hopped down from the horse and stepped closing to the flurry of hands and quick words. I could hear what they were saying after a few steps in their direction.
“…It’s just too risky. Wait three days and then we’ll go in.” Ella told Collin fiercely.
“How is it risky? It’s perfect in all actuality. They’ll be looking for Princess Addison. The guards won’t even be focused on us.” Collin retorted, running a hand through his hair.
“What? Who is looking for…the princess?” I cleared my throat and tried to hide my emotions.
“Some stupid bloke named Prince Anthony. I guess they still haven’t found your girl, Adam. Sorry, lad. But this is the best time to strike. No one will even look towards us once they see we’ve got no princess.” I was taking in each word from Lance’s mouth with total confusion.
“What? How did he get here so—What I mean is, the prince lives so far away, it’s odd how close he is to the kingdom. And what are we striking? Did you locate another stone?” I stepped towards them in question but Ella gave me a cold look that made me pause.
