It felt strange to be someone's girlfriend, stranger because her first romantic relationship was an LDR. But she had no idea what or how relationships work since she didn't have past experiences to compare to.
So far, so good, she thought. After all, Kai and Feli managed to withstand the test of time and distance for a year already.
Feli just arrived in NAIA in Metro Manila and she was sitting on one of the benches waiting for her flight to Tokyo to celebrate their first anniversary and her birthday. Again, hitting two birds with one stone.
To pass the time, she browsed through her phone, wherein the lockscreen was a silhouette picture of her and Kai holding hands facing the sunset. She looked into her gallery, particularly the folder that she made for all their dates. Feli would secretly look at the photos whenever she missed him.
Because the two of them were in a long distance relationship, they agreed that they meet each other in person once a month. They both knew how busy each other was so one weekend in a month would suffice. However, Kai insisted that they needed to be in communication regularly to compensate for the physical space between them.
Feli was feeling somewhat guilty because she only visited Kai twice in the past months. The first time that she went to Osaka, Kai offered to pay for her fare. She was hesitant but she needed to prioritize since she was saving up for Fatima's training at that point. She didn't tell him about her financial dilemma but she accepted the offer.
She looked at the photo of her with Kai's family. It was taken during her first visit to Japan and she was able to see Kai's family house in Osaka and meet his mother and Aya. She hadn't met his brother, Hiroshi, because he was in university. Still, it was such a fun time for her especially when Kai showed her around.
The second time that she went to Japan was on his birthday. Kai offered to pay for her trip again but then she kindly refused. Kai told her that he appreciated Feli saving up just so she could go to him but she still reasoned that he was already spending too much money and time just so he could visit her. It seemed to be unfair on his part. That was why whenever Kai visited her, Feli would usually insist on paying for their dates.
She looked at the photos that she took in his office. In one of them, she was seated on Kai's leather chair behind his table. The table was wide to accommodate several stacked files, pen holders, and a frame with his family picture (taken when his father was still alive). Kai was leaning in front of the table. He had a frown on his face and Feli was sure that it was because Mr. Yachiko, his secretary, was taking the photo.
When Feli took selfies of them when nobody else was around, Kai would try to offer an awkward smile. He really didn't like cameras, she chuckled at the thought.
She opened another folder and it was one of their trips to the beach. As she swiped through the compilation, she was reminded of that moment. She remembered that he was even a little emotional when they had that talk.
It was a nice day, the weather was perfect for a beach outing. The two of them set up lounge chairs under the shade of some trees. Thankfully, they weren't coconut trees so they were safe from any coconut that could possibly drop on their heads without warning.
She was not wearing anything revealing, just a thin long sleeved shirt and shorts. And it was also the same for him. Too bad, he wasn't topless. Nevertheless he looked really good in his outfit which was a black muscle shirt and beach shorts.
"I didn't know that I needed this kind of time away from the office. This place is perfect," he said.
"Told you you'd enjoy it here," she agreed as she sipped her pineapple juice.
