shawn and i stood in the elevator on our way down to the dressing room wing of the arena. it was two hours to game time and i was doing my favourite segment for the show: a model rates the  leafs arrival fits.

i tried to do this whenever i was allowed because i wanted to bring a sense of relatability to the big sports documentary show we were making. i stole one of the small cameras from the film crew and filmed myself as if i was vlogging on youtube.

we stood against the wall near where the boys would walk into the arena and i turned on the camera. "hey leafs fans, it's halley," i twisted it to face myself, "and we're back with my favourite segment: me ranking the boys outfits!"

i looked out the side of my eye and watched as shawn drank his beer, trying not to laugh. i hit him and looked back in the camera, "and today we have a not-so-special guest...who i'm sure all you torontonians will be excited to see at a leafs game...shawn mendes!" i exclaimed and turned the camera to face him.

"hello," he said straightly, pulling his pint of beer away from his mouth. i made a goofy face from behind the camera to make him smile, as i knew both the fans and i would love to see it.

"alright, so how it's gonna work today is that i'll give my initial thoughts and then mr pop star here will agree or disagree..." i turned the camera back to me and explained, "deal?" i asked shawn.

he nodded and the leafs bus pulled up, the coaches walking out first. i never rated the coaches because they wore the same boring suits every single game—some sort of superstitious dress code thing.

mitch and william walked out and i started relaying my thoughts to the camera. "okay, so we have will and mitch approaching us...mitch is looking dapper in his signature navy blue suit, with his favourite black beats...and a fucking beanie in california—canadian boy," i said, laughing. i technically wasn't allowed to curse but doing it made it seem much more blunt.

"mendes? thoughts before i praise will?" i turned to shawn, "yeah, love it...beanies are the best." he said, trying to seem somewhat intelligent.

"so with mitch is will—who just makes this little segment so fun—in a fucking emerald green suit! this man needs to take me shopping i love it," i laughed looking at the swedish boy.

the two of them approached us and mitch stopped to say hello to shawn—honestly rude—and kept walking into the arena. "you should wear a suit like that," i said to shawn and turned the camera to film his reaction.

most of the team filed in and i kept making stupid remarks about their outfits. shawn and i just stood against the wall laughing and cursing at the camera. any time i'd describe an outfit, he gazed at me with that look i'd grown to know.

auston was one of the last players to walk off the bus, dressed in a deep maroon suit, kind of like what he wore when he came to the AMAs. "and here we have the star of the show, auston!! we'll see if he notices us and says hi, but i think he's in game-time mode..." i whispered loudly into the camera.

"shawn, let's get a few comments on my best friend's outfit," i turned the camera to my left, but shawn was sitting on the ground.

"okay, so we have some awesome and very comfortable black jeans," he said, starting to show off his clothes. a smile grew on my face as he continued, "my favourite sweatshirt, and of course my chelsea boots."

"very funny, mendes," i laughed and flipped the camera back around. i looked back over at auston who walked by us, but raised his eyebrows to say hello. i never expected him to have full conversations before a game—i knew his rituals.

the last few players walked in and shawn and i were finally free to leave. i handed the camera back to the film crew and we walked back to the elevator.

we arrived back to our seats and watched the game. during the entire time i truly realized how much i like having shawn around.
