Entering Erwin's room you had come to check how his arm was. Being a doctor it was your duty to check up on the wellbeing of your patients.

You had brought with you a clean cloth to reapply to his amputated arm. As blood had already soaked the old one.

You gently removed the old bandages from the limb and wiped away all the blood. The area where the limb used to be had turned pink and tender. There were no visible injuries so far, although some dried blood could be seen along the edges of the wound.
Erwin looked at his arm while you applied the new dressing. "How are holding up Mr. Smith?"

The commander sighed, "please just call me Erwin. Just because your a doctor does not mean you need to be formal with me."

"It's how I address all my patients, I don't see why it should be any different with you. Anyway, I asked how you were?"

Erwin's shoulders seemed to sag with a heavy weight. "So many..."

You raised a brow, "what?"

"So many soldiers died under my command. Under my lead, we had so many losses. I'm always saying sacrifices are needed for the sake of humanity. But...the guilt and shame way on me, every life that is taken is a result of my actions."

He brought his hand up to his face, appearing to wanting to cry. But a man like him viewed such a thing as shedding tears as weak. When it fact that very thing would help ease some of the tension wearing him down.

A sigh left your lips as you finished wrapping the clean bandage around his limb. "Don't say such things, they didn't waste their lives so you could sulk." You scolded.

Erwin looked taken aback, quickly you put on a reassuring expression. Sitting on the edge of the bed beside him, placing a hand atop his. "There was nothing you or anyone else could have done better. Death unfortunately is a common reality within the survey crops. I should know."

Erwin met your now solemn gaze, "you have lost people close to you I assume?"

You answered with a simple nod.

A moment of silence passed before either of you spoke. Erwin was the first to break it, "I believe it's time for you to leave. Having other patients and all."

"You're right. But I think I might personally check up on you every now and then."

You stood, making your way to the door and departing with one last nod.

True on your word you made attempts to visit him frequently. The two of you held long conversations when in his presence, a smile from both parties at times.

The days of your company made a foundation for a friendship to form. But at certain points more than a friendly feeling would linger. When one would stare at other too long and too intently, a small touch here or there on the shoulder or back.

Warm smiles, whether born from laughter or happy memories shared between you and him. A relationship going beyond friendship coming to fruition.

Soon it came for Erwin to be discharged, which he oddly felt displeased with. Of course working in the medical field meant you were busy and would not have much time for him.

"Why do you look so down? I thought you'd be pleased to leave these four walls."

Erwin smiled, "don't get me wrong I am but I wish to stay with you. But I know our priorities keep us from doing so."

A light blush spread to your cheeks, "I see." The care you held for one another had been unspoken thing neither of you needed to confess to know the other's feelings.

Erwin suddenly stood and cupped your cheek in one hand, no words were shared as he pressed a kiss to your lips. His soft lips pressing against yours softly before you parted ways.

When he had gone you were not sad, for in those ocean eyes was an unspoken promise to meet again.
