"Sorry I got you hurt at times," Brother Chu held out his hand. "I enjoyed the workouts. And you have become so much stronger.."
"I don't feel lonely or sad anymore, and neither will you," Little Guo chimed in as he put his hand over the other two hands.
"Thank you, both of you," Shen Wei whispered, as Little Guo and Brother Chu faded away.
Integration - Day 6
It was Shen Wei's birthday. The dining table was decked out with food, and he had caught a peek of a decorated cake with candles on it. His father was home for a change; this would be the first time in he could not remember how many birthdays. He understood his father was a very busy man, but it did not stop him from missing him and feeling alone, especially on special days. This would be the best birthday ever!
For once, there were Shen Wei's favorite foods, probably because the staff knew his father would be there; depending on who was in the kitchen, he was often given leftover food. Jia Qiu was one of the few that was kind to him, and he would often sneak him something fresh. He also made a mental note to hide whatever presents later, so that they would not go missing. Some of the staff were not nice to him; they obviously behaved when his father was in the house, but he dared not say anything, because they would take revenge on him in subtle ways.
The doorbell chimed and Jia Qiu went to open the door - it was Uncle and Zhu Jiu. To be honest, Shen Wei's heart sank a little; he had been looking forward to not having to see them at all today. That would have been the best present ever...besides having his father home tonight, he sternly told himself. Yes, Father was home to celebrate his birthday with him! THAT was better than any of the many gaily wrapped boxes in the living room.
During dinner, the adults talked while the two children quietly ate. Shen Wei watched Zhu Jiu stuff himself; Uncle tried to limit his food intake to make him lose weight, but because of that, Zhu Jiu stole snacks and meals from everyone at school. He tried a few times to tell Zhu Jiu to stop eating, but Father told him to let him enjoy himself tonight. Shen Wei also noticed how Zhu Jiu would sneak peeks at the presents between bites, and he sighed inwardly as he wondered how many of them he would have to "share," which meant "give."
The lights went out, then Jia Qiu walked into the room carrying a cake alit with candles. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday," and Shen Wei closed his eyes as he made a wish, then blew out the candles. Yum, soft sponge cake with fruits and lots of fresh whipped cream, his favorite! He smiled at Jia Qiu, knowing this cake was his idea.
They all went into the living room where Shen Wei opened his presents as the adults had tea. Clothing, a new backpack for school, and his favorite two toys that he had been wishing for - an Optimus Prime Transformer robot, and a red remote-control Porsche!
Unfortunately, Zhu Jiu roughly grabbed the Transformer robot from Shen Wei, pulling off one of its arms. Although Uncle weakly scolded Zhu Jiu for breaking the brand new toy, Father told him it was okay. Shen Wei felt like crying - he had the toy in his hands for barely ten seconds, and it was already broken. He tried to hide the Porsche, but Zhu Jiu already had the remote control and promptly smashed the car into a glass sliding door, denting not only the car, but cracking the expensive glass. Uncle hurriedly said his goodbyes and roughly pulled Zhu Jiu out, while Shen Wei stood in the middle of the room, looking at his broken new toys. He closed his eyes, taking deep breaths, vaguely hearing his father's voice telling him to forgive his cousin, and also telling the staff to replace the door.
