"Shen Wei, believe me, I never wanted you to know about Kunlun, although it seems he finally wanted to make himself known to you, and knew that you would be able to accept him," Zhao Yunlan grinned. "He's quite fond of you, you know." Like I am, too, he silently added to himself.
"You did well all these years. Now let's take care of you," President Zhao said, as he put his hand on Zhao Yunlan's shoulder again and squeezed it.
Zhao Yunlan looked at Shen Wei, who gave an encouraging nod.
"When do we start?"
It was Zhao Yunlan who now lay on Sister Cheng's couch, listening to her soothing voice, urging him into the depths of his mind...where Kunlun was waiting for him.
Kunlun stood in front of him, with a beard, long hair braided and tied back into a ponytail, and dressed in ancient warrior garb. The face was the same as Zhao Yunlan's, but his heavily lined face with bags under his eyes made him look older. Despite his intimidating appearance, he had a grin on his face, and his eyes danced mischievously as he patiently waited until Zhao Yunlan was done inspecting him.
"Good-looking, aren't we?" Kunlun grinned as he pulled back his bangs so that Zhao Yunlan could get a better look at his face.
"Very," Zhao Yunlan returned the grin. "You look tired."
"It's been a long journey, and it got pretty hectic at times," Kunlun grinned.
"You did so much, watching over Shen Wei," Zhao Yunlan started.
"We BOTH did," Kunlun added as the surroundings faded and morphed.

It was a sunny day, and his father had left him alone while he went to the house for some business. There was a yard, and although his father had warned him to stay out of sight, he could not help but wander. It was such a pleasant day, after all.
He heard sniffling and an occasional sob...where was it coming from...? He wandered around, trying to locate the origin of the crying. Maybe it was one of the staff here; he had heard that the people who lived here were not very nice.
The crying seemed to be coming from behind a small bush off to the side. Zhao Yunlan approached quietly; he did not want to disturb the person who obviously needed some private time. But he could not turn a deaf ear, either. His father had taught him to help others.
He carefully peeked through a break in the branches and leaves. It seemed to be a little boy, just about his age. The boy sat on the ground, his knees up to his chest, and his head buried in his arms. Ah, he must have gotten into some kind of mischief and had been scolded, Zhao Yunlan smiled knowingly.
The boy's sniffles subsided, and he looked up into the sky. Zhao Yunlan's breath caught in his throat as he saw the boy's beautiful profile, so innocent, so pure, and his heart twisted with sadness, which then turned to anger. Who had dared to hurt him? Something inside of him made him want to protect this glowing angel, and he extended his hand through the bush to touch the boy's shoulder.
