Percy and Malcolm got off the pegasi. The wind was blowing hard. It was cold.
"If we don't come back, leave okay Blackjack? Things are going to get nasty here." Percy informed Blackjack.
Sure thing boss, Blackjack replied.
Malcolm was ahead of him, crouching as he examined some tracks on the muddy dirt. Percy ran to catch up to him and saw what he was looking at. It seemed as if the tracks belonged to a snake.
Malcolm looked at their surrounding. Nothing but trees and dirt.
"What are they from? Snakes?" Percy asked as he crouched next to Malcolm.
Malcolm frowned at the snake look alike tracks.
"No, I don't believe so... these look different."
Percy couldn't understand how they would look different to Malcolm. They still seemed like snake trails to him.
The wind blew harder. Percy assumed it was because it was almost fall.
Malcolm kept on looking at the tracks. His eyes looking at every detail. He slowly and carefully touched it and his eyes widened in realization.
"Holy Hera...It's the Lamia."he said as if he was speaking to himself. Percy creased his forhead.
"The what now? What is that? Some kind of extinct animal or somthing?" Malcolm shook his head rapidly.
"No- it's a demon cursed by Hera. It- well let's just say she likes eating babies. Preferably, demigod babies." Malcolm looked at Percy terrified.
Percy felt his mouth go dry. What if this demon had taken and eaten his chil- no he had to think positive. Jordan was still alive somewhere out there.
"What? Is she here or something?" Percy looked at Malcolm. Malcolm looked at the tracks and then at the abandoned building that was almost hidden by trees.
Percy, fearing the worst, reached into his jacket's pocket and took out Riptide. He could feel a strange presance. Something he had never felt before in his life.
"She eats babies..." Malcolm was whispering. He looked over at Riptide,"No-wait,put that away Percy." Percy grimaced as he capped Riptide and put the pen back in his pocket.
"We need to check that out." Malcolm said staring at the building. He stood up and Percy followed as they walked very quietly to the building. It seemed as if it had been abandoned for many years now. The paint was peeling off and some of the windows were broken.
Percy noticed the scratches on some of the trees but decided to ignore them.
That's when they heard a shriek. A woman's shriek. It seemed to be coming from inside the building. Percy and Malcolm froze in their tracks. Malcolm took out his dagger while Percy took out Riptide. The sky was getting darker slowly.
Percy made a run for it, and ran to the building.
"Percy,No!" Malcolm protested but still followed after him. Percy stopped running once they were just feet away from the nearest window. He turned to Malcolm, who was breathing deeply.
Together, they both walked to the window. Percy looked inside and could see a candle bringing light to the room. He mostly saw baskets. Baskets in almost every place you looked.
"We have it all wrong, this is not the empousi's place...this is Lamia's home. Actually its more like where she is staying for the moment." Malcolm whispered.
He continued,"If you think about it, Lamia likes eating babies so it's more likely for those baskets to be full of dead baby bodies. She isn't here right now. Maybe went to look for her next treat."
Percy looked at the baskets in disgust. They were filled with dead bodies. Dead innocent baby body remainings. He could guess that it had to be the baby's bones mostly in the baskets.
"So we have Hera to thank for this demon." Percy said through gritted teeth. Malcolm nodded slowly.
The weather was getting colder. "What is this place?" Percy asked.
"The climate's too cold, almost as if there is going to be hailing." Malcolm said, ignoring Percy's question. It started snowing all of a sudden.
"We have to go." Malcolm shouted over the rising winds. Percy could barely hear him with the roar of the wind. Both of them tried making their way to the pegasus but it was as if the wind didn't want to them to leave.
Percy felt as if he was freezing to death. It was getting harder to breath and receive air. He collapsed on his knees trying to get air. But he couldn't.
He turned to where Malcolm had been standing and found him buried in the raising snow, unmoving.
Percy fell on his back, trying to get air but couldn't. He looked at the gloomy sky as two pegasus flew by. He was sure it was Blackjack and his friend heading home for help. It was the last thing he saw before falling into a world of darkness.
