It hadn't been easy, moving on.

In fact, Rose had struggled for years trying to get over Ben. But she just couldn't get his face out of her head. Of course, Klaus had been by her side throughout all of it. And she knew that he was trying to move on too, hiding his grief to help with hers and Rose doubted that she would have made it this far without him. So they helped each other.

That's why, 13 years later, they were still attached at the hip. They did everything together, even their addictions.

Their lives were anything but nice and at first, the drugs had been convenient. In Rose's head, it could be seen as medicine. It kept the demons away and cleared their heads. The voices disappeared for hours at a time and it was magical. Klaus and Rose had been able to have full nights of sleep and relax for the first time in their lives.

But the silence had consequences.

The silence allowed for things other than ghosts and ghouls to drift into Rose's head. There was so much space where, in the past, there had been demons and fear that her brain didn't know what to do with it and so instead, it was replaced with him. His voice, his face, his laugh, his everything. It wasn't fair. All she had ever wanted was silence and she couldn't even have that.

Night after night, Rose would wake up in cold sweats or even be to afraid to sleep because of the nightmares. It was like being trapped in that room as a kid again, the scene of her hands covered in blood as she cradled his body in her arms. Crying and screaming as Luther ripped her away from him. It had become so bad that she had thought she'd seen him. Not only in strangers' faces but in the mirrors too. She had always been afraid that eventually, she would see him; but he had been dead for a long time and he never appeared.

Rose had just assumed that he moved over to the other side to find peace or whatever. She didn't know much about the afterlife, other than the fact that it followed her around everywhere she went, but Klaus had told her that she hadn't seen him because he'd "walked into the light at the end of the tunnel" or some bullshit. Despite the hole in her heart, she was glad she couldn't see him. The thought of seeing his face again after sixteen years sent her into overdrive and she didn't think she would be able to cope. Which is why when she saw him in their bathroom mirror, she broke down.

- 2 years earlier

Exhausted from the time she and Klaus had spent on the streets today, Rose lazily leant forward to switch the cold water tap on. Muttering under her breath about how she needed to get some more face wash she knew damn well they couldn't afford, she cupped her hands together and filled them with water, smothering her face with it and attempting to wash the seemingly indestructible grime off. Drying her hands and face on a dirty towel next to her, she hummed softly to herself, some stupid song she had written in hopes of catching her boss's attention and earning enough money from her next bar gig to feed her and her brother for at least a week.
