'We only see each other at weddings and funerals'

Rose laid relaxed across one of the large couches in the sitting room, her legs crossed at the ankles. She watched the roaring fire across the room and stared at the picture of little Five on the mantle. What the hell happened to him? He'd clearly been through a lot in the forty five years he claimed to have spent in the future and he most definitely wasn't the same as the last time she'd seen him.

He was no longer the bad tempered little boy they used to know. He was more mature and collected but the weirdest thing was that he refused to look Rose in the eye. They hadn't been that close as kids but she almost always taken his side of any arguments and she appreciated how he actually treated Vanya as a human being. So his weird side glances when he thought she wasn't looking were definitely strange.

Rose's thoughts were interrupted when Five stepped into the room. Not noticing her presence on the couch, the boy strolled over to the fireplace and observed his portrait above it and a few moments later, Vanya strolled in behind him also completely unaware of the woman on the couch. Rose knew that the two had been close when they were young and she remembered how distraught Vanya had been after he left, always hiding sandwiches and leaving lights on for him. It made sense that she was shocked and confused by her feelings again after unexpectedly reuniting with him, looking the same as he had when he left no less.

"Nice to know dad didn't forget me." Five commented. Rose's view was blocked by the back of the couch and so she just shut her eyes, silently eavesdropping.

"Read your book, by the way. Found it in a library that was still standing." He paused for a minute before continuing. "I thought it was pretty good, all things considered. Yeah definitely ballsy, giving up the family secrets. Sure that went over well."

"They hate me." Vanya spoke for the first time since she had entered the room, her voice shakey.

"Oh, there are worse things that can happen."

"You mean like what happened to Ben?" Rose froze in her position, flashes of what had happened to the boy flew through her mind and she screwed her eyes shut, breathing shallowly.

"Was it bad?" Vanya didn't reply but Rose couldn't risk having to listen to her explain Ben's death to the boy and so she jumped to her feet, brushing the dust off of her knees as Five and Vanya turned to face her. Vanya opened and closed her mouth, not knowing what to say and Five looked down and the floor, avoiding her eyes.
