Billy felt the heat of blood on his cheek and the taste of iron in his mouth, looked up to see the angry face of his father, who closed his fist to hit him once more, Max was crying scared in a corner, Susan hugging her, his father kept yelling at him about not being a pussy, a disgusting cocksucker and all that crap, all because he'd come home in Steve's car, he'd repeated over and over that his Camaro's battery had died, that Steve was a classmate, that he was the brother of one of Max's friends; that was a lie but it would sound very strange to tell him that Steve was  best friend with children 5 years younger than him, still his father insisted that he did not lie to him, that he had seen how he smiled at him, how he touched him, how he looked at him, and about that he was also wrong, Billy made sure he didn't notice how much he was in love with Steve.

-I never want to see you near him! My son is not a disgusting faggot!

He beat him over and over, his lip and eyebrow were already broken, he had bruises on his cheek, his neck was red when he strangled him, his back hurt from pushing him against the wall, his hair also hurt from the brutal tugs, his eyes were somewhat clouded and his breathing was agitated, but he could see that his father was willing to give him one more blow. It never came, though.

The door to his house, which seemed to have been left unlocked by his father's violent welcome, opened wide, revealing a young man with a slim but strong figure, perfectly placed brown hair, sweet chocolate eyes and impeccable skin, but all of that was overshadowed by the angry look on Steve Harrington's face. The young man caught up with them in a couple of strides, Billy didn't wonder with those long legs, caught his father's fist twisting his wrist tightly, the man complained about the pain, pushed Billy away by slamming him against the opposite wall, lifted him by the neck, Susan was expectant but did nothing to stop him, Max stopped crying hard to suck his nose.

-Steve -sobbed the redhead

-Don't worry, Max, this is over -he spoke softly to the youngest before looking back at the man in front of him -Listen to me, you bastard, I don't care how bad you think  your son is, you should never lay a hand on a son, let alone with the brutality with which you do it; this time I will forgive your disgusting existence for the love I have for Max and for the respect I owe your wife, but if it were up to me, I would rip your guts out with my bare hands. You get out of jail, Mr Hargrove, not the cemetery

Steve let go of the man's shirt and he fell to the ground with a sudden breath of air, the boy walked away from him to approach the blond on the floor, crouched beside him and touched his face to get his attention, Billy had a hard time focusing, but he knew it was Steve because of the light flooding his eyes.

-Are you all right?

-I'm tough to crack, you know, Harrington

The dark-haired man helped him to rise up with great care and slowness, keeping him leaning against the wall, removed some of the blood from his face and removed the tufts that had fallen before his eyes.

-Billy will come with me, I'll take him right now and I'll come back for his things as soon as you're gone, he's of age so he's free to live anywhere he wants

-Don't...

-I'm not asking for permission! -shouted Steve louder than even Neil -Billy will come with me and no more talking! I don't want to see you near my house, or the school, or anywhere he is! I swear I'll make your life miserable if you even look at him!

-You can't! -shouted Neil Hargrove furiously charging at him

But Steve was not beaten, he avoided the punch and returned it, Neil touched his aching stomach, Steve hit his cheek by knocking him down at once, he was stronger than you could appreciate and even more for his people , besides that Billy had taught him a few things.

- You are lucky that Billy is your son -spat Steve with contained fury -He is too good to hit back, but I do not, remember, I have already told you that I will put you under the ground at least

Steve walked away from him and took Billy by the waist, passing one arm over his shoulders, the blond still holding.

-Max, if anything happens, with you or with your mother, call me -said Steve looking at the redhead, who nodded cleaning her eyes -I swear I will take care of him, little girl, he will live like the king he is, and you can come whenever you want, my house is your house, yes?

-Yes -mused Max

-I warn you for the last time, Mr Hargrove, my family has the best lawyers in Hawkins and Indiana, and I don't even have to tell you that the chief of police is a close friend of mine, in fact, it's as if he were my father, if you dare to raise an eyebrow against Billy, Max or Mrs Hargrove, I'll put you on death row

Neil looked at Steve furiously but said nothing, the chestnut head took for granted and left the house holding Billy, who was barely walking, helped him get into the car, locked up and started the engine, driving without saying anything and with white hands from pressing the steering wheel, but a few kilometers later, when he had left the neighbourhood, he stopped the car under the shade of a tree and breathed, Billy looked at him attentively, he didn't realize Steve had been holding his breath this whole time.

-Have I been okay? -sighed Steve

-You were great, I almost pee in my pants, you're scary when you get angry-Nancy says it's because I hardly ever do it, so I accumulate fury and when I jump, boom, apocalypse

Billy laughed softly because his side ached, Steve turned to him and stroked his face, his neck, his chest, his side, to every open wound his eyes became damp, until at the end he could not hold back the tears.

-Hey, hey, princess, don't cry -whispered Billy stroking his cheek -I'm fine, now I'm fine, you rescued this monster, you stupid little princess

Steve laughed a second against Billy's hand.

-You're wrong, you're no monster, they made you be one, that is very different-Yeah? If I just look like it, what I really am, Harrington?

Steve raised his face a little by looking Billy in the eyes, those blue eyes that could only be a window to the sky, and approached leaving a kiss on his lips softer than the touch of air, but that altered the hearts of both.

-A king, Hargrove, a king -mused -And the queen always protects the king, Billy, chess did not invented that rule because yes

Billy smiled despite the pain of his lips and jaw, because that's what it was like to be with Steve Harrington, forget all his sorrow, solve all his problems, disappear all his pain.

-Long live my queen
