I pulled my keys out of my bookbag and stared at the lock for a moment before inserting the key. I turned my head over to the right to look at the driveway which contained two cars parked in it. Both cars being present meant that both of my parents were home. I heaved a sigh as I built up my courage for the conversation that was to occur momentarily. I turned back to the front door and turned the key unlocking the door walking inside.
"Adeline?"
"Yeah mom, it's me."
Removing my bag from my shoulders, I walked down the hallway and turned to my right to be met with the living room where both my mom and dad were sitting by the fireplace watching TV.
"Hey Adie." My dad said looking up from the TV at me.
I couldn't help but smile at my dad. My dad was the only one in the world that called me that. No one else not even Torrie. Because of that, the nickname held special meaning to me.
Since I was an only child, my parents are my world. I look just like my mom especially as I got older. The only difference between us is height. She is 5'5". Due to how similar we look there is a running joke that I am her clone instead of 'their' daughter. My dad is taller than my mom at 5'10" with dark brown hair and eyes as well. I couldn't understand how in the world I only ended up being five feet tall considering my both parent's height. But such was life, right?
My mom works with my dad at his practice. My dad is a doctor. He has a small practice that is located not far from where we lived in town. I always help out during summers. At least I did up until I started College. My dad had hoped that I would take over his practice one day. Initially, I had planned to do exactly that until I was gifted my first camera for my thirteenth birthday. That was the turning point in my life.
I loved taking pictures and it turned out that I had a natural eye for it. Being inexperienced, I just took pictures of things that caught my eye. When I had my first set of pictures printed up the photographer at the printing shop told me that I had quite the eye for photography. Granted I had been told that by my parents, but they are my parents so of course they would tell me that. The photographer asked me if I wanted to learn more, and I agreed right away. He suggested different photography books and photographers that I should look into. I fell in love with all of it. I couldn't believe how many different types of photographers there were. Landscape, portrait, fine art, etc. After that, all I cared about was photography. My dad was a bit disappointed that I wasn't going to become a doctor and take over his practice. However, at the same time my dad along with my mom encouraged me to pursue my passion and supported me wholeheartedly.
I was really hoping that they were still going to be supportive when I broke the news to them that I was going to be taking time off of college and would be leaving the country to travel with a band.
I cleared my throat after a moment which got my parent's attention.
"Um, can I talk to you guys about something?" I asked as I started to bite the bottom of my lip which was something I did when I was nervous.
My dad picked up the TV remote and turned the TV off. He motioned for me to sit in the seat adjacent to them. Their attention was fully focused on me now.
"So, I have some news to share with you guys." I started.
"Does it have to do with school?" My mom asked when I didn't elaborate.
"Yes and no." I replied as I thought here goes nothing. "I received a job offer today. It is a professional photographer job to be exact."
"Really Adie, that is fantastic." My dad smiled at me warmly.
