Summer of 1987
A year after the Vecna's downfallTrigger warnings: mentions of assault. Scars
It was a beautiful day and somehow Steve got stuck fucking babysitting.
He didn't start the day thinking he was going to babysit the boys, but Dustin's mom dropped them off and then suddenly they're demanding him to drive to some store.
Steve had a later shift, he shouldn't have told Henderson about it. He should've kept his mouth shut.
The store was small, brightly colored and was called "Dragon's Lair". There were pictures of superheroes on the windows.
He was not excited.
"Come on Steve! You're wasting daylight." Dustin walked inside, yelling behind him.
Mike and Lucas walked in as well.
Steve followed while shaking his head. The building was cool at least, there were comic books everywhere. And figurines, and boxes.
A teenager about Dustin and the others' age stood at the counter and perked up when he noticed them. He was tall and lanky, with curly blond hair and wearing a shirt with a monster on it.
"Hey guys!" He said happily, moving his glasses up.
"Hey Charlie." Mike walked over and handed him something. "Can you get these made? Eddie requested them."
At the mention of Eddie, Steve was suddenly not bored. He looked at the teens closely. Whatever Mike handed over looked like paper.
"Definitely. It's going to cost a good bit though, these are difficult to make."
"I know. Here. We need them for the big campaign. Eddie is still planning it and we added a new player." Mike gestured over his shoulder at Steve.
Dustin had grabbed three boxes. And put them in Steve's arms.
"What the hell?"
"Take it to the counter."
Steve didn't even bother protesting at this point. He just did what the kid said as Dustin and Lucas looked for other things.
He noticed the boxes said "Dungeons and Dragons." He wondered why they needed three new boxes.
"Adding those too?" Charlie asked. Mike nodded.
"Dustin and Lucas are looking for dice now."
More dice? What was with them?
Steve looked around the store and started reading a few of the comics. They looked interesting.
He especially liked Thor, he had long hair and was a God. He grabbed a copy and thought of Eddie. He wondered if he liked Thor. So he grabbed another one and walked to the other side of the store. Sorta hiding the comics away from the younger boys' sight.
Lucas and Dustin had joined Mike at the counter and were telling Charlie in extreme detail about how something needed to be perfect.
"Seriously Charlie, it needs to look exactly like this. We need perfection." Lucas insisted.
"Guys I get it. You told me a million times and you've barely been here for five minutes. Have I ever let you down?"
They shook their heads.
"Exactly. Now who's that guy?" Charlie pointed over to Steve.
"That's Steve, he's our friend. And also he's going the party soon."
"It's a one time deal. And only because Eddie talked me into it."
Charlie laughed. "Oh so you're the guy Eddie and Dustin have been talking about? And good luck on it being a one time deal. That's what I said and I've been in Hell Fire for five months now."
