Chapter 1
I was staring down at the questions with wide eyes. I didn't know the answer of any of them. The only way I could pass this test, was if I swiched with my twin brother, John.
"Psst, John," I whispered. He turned his head a little and noticed that I was handing him my test, so he was handing me his.
This was enough to get at least a C. With that thought in mind, I got up from the chair and handed John's test to the teacher.
"Stop right there, Grimes," he said, and looked at the test. "You are Edward, not John. Tell me, why are you handing in your brother's test?"
"What the hell, I AM John, THAT is Edward!" I lied, and pointed at John. "You should know this!"
The teacher suddenly looked confused, just as planned. John was just about to hand in my test, so then I left the classroom.
It was amazing how we always could confuse our teachers. That was one of the many benefits of being identical twins.
Math next. We were with our lockers to get our books when we hard talking and laughter from some way too familiar boys. There was no questioning who were making their way over; Bullies.
The bullies always picked on us for every single detail, tried to split us up, and made us feel worthless and miserable. John and I had made a promise, though; As long as we had each other, bullies wouldn't get to us.
"Look who it is," one of the bullies said. "The cheaters."
"And how can you tell if we cheat?" John replied carefully, almost whispering. "You can't even tell who's who."
"Oh I can tell who's who," the bully said. I turned around with books in my arms. The bully was closing in, and I could tell that John was scared of what would happen next. "You're the dead one."
And then, all of a sudden, the bully pushed John up against the lockers, causing him to drop his books. He held around his neck, as if trying to strangle him, and I felt myself panicking.
"What the hell are you doing?!" I shouted. My books too dropped to the ground, and I rushed forward and tried to push the bully away. "Stop it, he can't breathe!"
John held around the bully's wrists, trying to hold himself up and not to get strangled. His feet was kicking, looking for somewhere to push himself up, but there was nothing. I was desperately hitting the bully's right arm, being so freaked out I couldn't think of anything better. My pulse was sky-high.
"HE CAN'T BREATHE," I repeated, this time shouting it out.
Just then, something weird happened.
In just a glimt of a second, John let go of the wrists, and grabbed hold of the bully's shirt, which caught fire. The bully jumped backwards, leaving John to drop to the ground.
We were both in shock. It had happened so fast I could barely wrap my head around it.
The bully threw his shirt off and kicked the flames, and seconds later they were gone. He then turned back to us, and his facial expression was full of anger and hatred.
"Are you crazy?! Are you trying to kill me?!" he kept shouting. Other students had taken steps closer to see what was going on, and all eyes were on us. I felt my heart beating faster. I was questioning myself if the bully was going to kill me and my brother.
Before I got to know the answer, I did what felt right; I grabbed John's arm and ran past the bully and all the observers, not looking up or saying a word to any of them.
Not until we were completely alone did I turn to John. He was obviously still shocked and confused, looking at his bare hands and around in the room.
"What the hell was that?" I said. "Do you have a lighter or something?"
"No, what would I do with a lighter?"
"I don't know, but what did you do then?"
"I don't know, it was crazy! It was like..." He trailed off and looked at his hands. "It was like magic!"
Honestly, how cool would that be?
This had to be a coincidence, though. There had to be some explanation for what just happened. He didn't have a lighter - or if he did, he had been great at hiding it. John had simply grabbed the bully's shirt and had it catching fire. It was defying the laws of physics.
"Edward," John called, breaking my thoughts. "we're gonna be late for class,"
"... Oh... Right..."
He didn't seem to worry about what he just did. What if he knew something I didn't? No, he wouldn't hide anything from me, I'm his best friend. Maybe it wasn't as serious as I thought? John didn't seem to worry, and he's the older twin. I was probably just overreacting, but the thought worried me; John sat fire to someone from grabbing him by his shirt. That should not be possible, right?
