Chapter 12
Was I dead?
I was not sure if I wanted to open my eyes. I did not want to see what death looked like. I was only 17, I was not ready to die!
I was, however, kind of curious, and because of this curiosity, I was able to pressure myself to open my eyes.
Everything I saw was flames. Flames that were fighting to reach me, but couldn't. They were held back by something that looked like blue, glowing glass. A piece of magic that was not created by me.
It was a magic shield, created by someone I could recognise anywhere. A girl that had been nothing but a friend to me ever since I met her. Leah had saved my life.
"Leah!" I said out loud, holding my left arm over my right ribs while my right hand was supporting my upper body. "You have no idea how glad I am to see you!"
"I can't stand like this forever," she informed me. "The shield will break!"
"Okay, um... How do I make a shield?"
"Push your hands forward!"
Just at that moment, the shield broke like glass, into a thousand pieces, which disappeared with a blue light in the air. Leah fell straight to the ground, next to me, and the man stopped shooting fire towards us.
"Are you ready to give up?" he said. His smile was creeping me out. It was cold and cruel, and he obviously did not care about us getting hurt.
He held his hands together and raised them. Both his palms were aimed towards us, and as the fire came, I ignored the pain in my ribs, and pushed my hands forward.
A big, magic shield, identical to Leah's, had been created right in front of my bare hands. I could feel the shield's temperature raising as the flames were trying to break it.
"What the hell!" I heard, and a fireball was shot towards the man. I recognised the voice right away; it was John.
The fireball knocked the man over, and I was able to let go of the hot shield. He shot an angry glance at John, without any sign of damage done to him.
"What is wrong with you?!" he yelled. "We're on the same side!"
"I don't care, that's my brother you're shooting at!" Instead of fleeing, I found myself staring emotionless at what was going on - not only because of my broken ribs, but because I did not want to leave my brother in something that could turn into a fight.
Leah quickly crawled over to me, and put her hands over my ribs. A little relief hit me. I could feel the pain vanishing, and after just a few seconds, it was all gone.
"God, John, don't be such a baby," I heard, and Lis stepped out of the dark. Last time I saw her she was in Dublin, what was she doing here?
Her pitch black hair was covering her left eye, and her right eye was bloody red. She looked way darker than last time I saw her.
I looked at Leah, who was obviously shocked over seeing Lis in this demention. She turned to me with big eyes, probably thinking the same as me.
"Wouldn't you get angry if someone hurt Leah?!" John almost yelled back at Lis.
He shouldn't have asked that question, because Lis' respond, was a quick look at her sister, and without doubting a second, a fireball was shot. Leah didn't even get time to react. She was threwn several feet backwards as she was hit, and I could almost feel the pain myself.
"Does that answer your question?" Lis said and raised her eyebrows. I could not believe what just happened. I stared at the body lying several feet away from me. She wasn't moving.
"Leah!" I yelled, hoping for some kind of reply.
Nothing.
"This is so wrong," I heard as I got up on my feet and rushed over to Leah. I rolled the body over on the back as I heard Lis and John's disgussion behind mine. I couldn't care less about it, questioning myself if Leah was alive or not.
The fireball had hit the spot under her ribs - the same spot Lis hit me when she attacked me.
She wasn't awake.
As I felt my panic taking over, I leaned over to see if she was breathing.
Nothing.
Pulse?
I grabbed her hand and held around her wrist.
A relief came to me as I felt the beats. She had a pulse.
I turned around.
"Okay, I don't care what you guys are up to, in short time Leah will DIE!" I said loud and serious. "Someone gotta heal her, c'mon, HELP HER!"
"Do you wanna join her maybe?" Lis asked, still with her cold, emotionless glance. The man got up on his feet, and was just about to shoot us again, but John stopped him.
"Edward, there's no point in asking them for help, just get Leah safe already!" John commanded me in a hurry.
"John, this is serious, stop messing around!" He quickly pushed Lis' hands behind her back so she was unable to use her magic toward us.
"I'm serious! Get Leah safe!"
There was no time to lose. Leah's life was in danger.
I laid the unconcious body in my arms - carefully, before I started running back to the school.
Every time I looked back, I saw more people attacking John. One after another came out of the woods and tried to hunt my brother down, but they couldn't. John was stronger than them.
I turned my face again and felt a tear rolling down my left cheek. It felt like my whole life was falling apart. John was in a fight, Lis was totally cold-blooded and Leah was dying. Where did everything go wrong? Was it something I did?
As I entered the school, I thought to myself, 'where can I find a healer?'. I desperatly looked around, trying to figure out where to go.
"Edward Grimes, what are you doing up at a time like this?" I heard a lady voice say really serious.
Suddenly I saw Ms. Harrison marching towards us. She looked almost angry as she took Leah out of my arms.
"Follow me, Edward," she said.
I did as I was told. I was going to get in trouble, wasn't I? I never had - at least not alone. It had happened a few times that me and John got in trouble at school.
I followed Ms. Harrison to her office, and she laid Leah down on a couch. She put her hands over Leah, and that was when I understood that Ms. Harrison was a healer.
I felt free to panic now, and broke down on the floor, mumbling out everything going on in my head.
"Why can John make fires when I can't? Why is he changing? Why is he turning against me?" I was not even sure if Ms. Harrison could hear me - I didn't speak that loud, and she was busy healing Leah.
"Leah is fine, we just have to wait for her to wake up." Ms. Harrison walked over to her desk and settled down. "I can see that you are upset, Edward, but I need you to take a deep breath and tell me what happened."
Again, I did as I was told - I took a long, deep breath as some tears escaped my eyes.
"John is out there, he-"
I was cut off by the door, and as I turned to it, I got a huge shock.
A blonde guy entered the room. It was easy to see that he was naturally brunette, and his eyes were a mix of brown and green.
It was John... NORMAL John...
