Chapter 15
"What is John's personal ability?" Ms. Harrison asked me. She had a serious facial expression, but sounded very calm.
I had been sent to Ms. Harrison's office the minute after what I said in class. Leah was lying on a couch in the corner of the room, still not awake.
"I-" I started. "I don't know, I don't think he has one - when we were back home he got mad at me, saying it wasn't fair how I had a personal ability when he didn't."
"Every wizard has a personal ability."
"But what if that's false? What if John doesn't have one?" Ms. Harrison remained quiet. I looked down at my hands before I continued. "John has red eyes and black hair, he can make fires, and he has transformed into something cold - almost evil. Apparently identical twins are supposed to be immune but obviously we aren't. Ever since we discovered magic I knew something was going on with him. He used to be my best friend but now... Now I'm not sure who he is anymore..." I felt almost crushed as I spoke, with tears escaping the corners of my eyes. I was far from used to being alone. John had been with me all my life, and my little speech made me realise that he was not the brother I grew up with. I looked up at Ms. Harrison, who had still not spoken. I quickly wiped away a tear. "Is there nothing we can do?"
Ms. Harrison looked slightly more stressed, and started walking around in the room. I was hoping for some kind of answer where I sat, then I saw something moving in the corner of my eye. I immediately turned my head. It looked like Leah was waking up.
I burst into action, and rushed over to the couch where she was lying. After turning over, she looked up at me.
"Edward?" She said and settled up. "Oh my god, where's John? And Lis?"
"They're still out there."
"Wait," Ms. Harrison said. "So what you're saying, is that there are more dark wizards in this demention?" Leah and I nodded. "Oh my goodness this is not supposed to happen..." She started walking around again, mumbling to herself about the dark wizards.
Wait, I still had some un-answered questions, didn't I?
"There's one more thing..." I started. "I'm a future dreamer, but I also have visions, and last night I dreamt the past from John's point of view... Is that normal?"
"Ah, you have EPA - Extended Personal Ability. It is very rare, but it has happened before. EPA allows you to do things related to your ability. For example, a healer would be able to make people and animals sick, and a teleporter would be able to run fast and teleport objects. You, as a future dreamer, will have visions and sometimes dream the past. You dreamt from John's point of view because, well, you are identical twins, and the connection between the two of you sometimes gets involved in magic." She looked in another direction. "However..." I gulped and shot a glance at Leah. Oh no, not more bad news, I thought. "Identical twins share the same dna, which means that diseases, allergies and others, including EPA, will affect both parts. A personal ability is some sort of bonus that comes with magic, and if John does not have one, I suppose his magic is stronger. I'm afraid that EPA in this case will cause his magic to be way stronger than it already is."
"So... What does that mean?"
"It means that John might be the most powerful wizard we've ever come across."
Seriously? These kind of things only happen in movies!
"We are not safe here anymore," Ms. Harrison added. "All wizards must return to earth, and the portal has to be closed."
"Wait, you mean we have to trap the dark wizards in this demention?" Leah quickly asked.
"Yes, it is the best way to safety."
"I'm not leaving John!" I suddenly burst out. The thought leaving my twin brother trapped in another demention made me anxious. I could not imagine what my life would be like if every time I looked to the right, John was not there.
I also had Lis in the back of my head. We didn't get the best start, but somehow I'd found a way to fall for her. To my defense, I was pretty sure those dark wizards couldn't control their own actions. I mean, if it happens to one part of every twin couple, then there has to be something controlling the evil, right? There has to be something causing it.
"We don't have any choice - your brother is too strong to fight, and without a cure, we are helpless."
"We'll figure out something!"
"I'm with Edward," Leah added and put her arm around my shoulder. "Evil or not, my sister is out there, and you can't force me to leave her."
Ms. Harrison sighed, then looked at the both of us.
"You are making this more difficult than it has to be," she said and settled down with her desk. "I guess we could create a giant shield around the school." She folded her hands and looked back up at us. "John's magic will break it easily, but it will give us slightly more time."
"Wait," Leah cut her off. " More time? What are they going to do? Why are they so dangerous?"
"Well... They want power - our power. The school is the source of good wizards, so the dark wizards will get here one way or another, and in order to steal someone's powers, they will have to end their lives first."
Leah let out a loud gasp before she covered her mouth. I just stood there, staring into the open air with a blank facial expression. I refused to believe what I had heard. My brother was not, and never would be, a murderer, and that was final.
"Do I need to say more?" Ms. Harrison asked, and Leah and I shook our heads. She rose and walked towards the door. "Everyone must come together in the hall - the more wizards, the stronger shield."
"Can I go to the toilet first?" I asked. Ms. Harrison stopped and looked at me, and Leah shot me an odd glance. "What? If you gotta go, you gotta go..."
Ms. Harrison laughed a little, then continued walking. Should I take that as a yes?
I snuck out of the office and over to the boys' bathroom, leaving my thoughts floating as I walked.
Stupid magic. Yes, of course it was cool having magic, but the price was big. No one had told me my brother would become evil when we discovered magic. I'd much rather have my old life back.
"You told them!" I heard. I held the door open and looked back to see my brother walking towards me. He did not look happy.
"I know your plan, okay," I said, and John entered the bathroom as well. There was no blonde locks left on his head - his hair was a black mess, and it made him look gothic. I did not feel comfortable looking in his red eyes. They were nothing like they used to be. It looked like blood surrounding his pupils.
"You promised not to tell on me! I trusted you, and I thought we were best friends!" Okay, now he's just playing with my feelings.
"Just stop okay, you left me no choice! I tried to be a good friend and brother but you wouldn't cooperate." John did not say anything. His facial expression had not changed, though - he still looked very angry, as if everything was my fault.
But it wasn't... Right...?
I could not blame him either, though. I knew it wasn't his fault. John just wasn't himself. The real John would never act this way.
I quickly looked at his hands. His fists were shaking; an obvious sign that he was fighting to not do something. But the next second, the clenching stopped, and as I saw the hands making their way towards me, I threw myself to the floor. It all went so fast. I felt the heat of John's flames surrounding me, and I would call myself lucky for not being dead.
That was way too close...
It lasted no longer than about two seconds, and when I looked back up, all I could see was burnt walls and broken mirrors. John had tears in his eyes, but his facial expression was the same.
"John?" I said very carefully, and he looked at me right away.
"John is not here anymore."
