Chapter 5

When I and John got home from school that day, John went straight up to our bedroom. I stopped by the kitchen to have something to eat.

I opened the fridge to find some sushi, and simply just shoved it into my mouth. It was cold, and not fresh, but really good and teasty. I loved sushi.

I grabbed my bag and went upstairs with it. John was lying in his bed, having a nap. He was probably sleepy because he was up last night.

It suddenly hit me. What was he doing there anyway? Why would he leave the house in the middle of the night, just to test his powers? Why didn't he wake me up and say he were going out? It wasn't like him..

I shot a glance at his hair, and thought back to when we were at school. I could remember that his hair looked darker because of the light.

However, it wasn't the light that made it look darker. It actually WAS darker! How come his hair was darker than mine? We always dye it at the same time!

When I looked further down, I noticed something on his arm. It was a huge, red mark, as if he'd burned himself. It must have happened by the house last night.

It didn't make any sense. John burned down a house at 4 am. He's seeing this girl, Lis, that I've never even heard of. His hair is darker, and it seems like he's hiding stuff from me.

I threw myself onto my bed and pulled myself together. It was John, I'd known him for my whole life. He would never ever keep secrets from me. He wouldn't do anything wrong. As I told myself almost every day, he was my very best friend. Nothing could ever split us.

I shouldn't worry about his powers nor what he did with them. No matter what he'd do, I'd forgive him. I'd never be mad at him. He's the only one I have.

I was outside, and everything was dark. I was definitly on planet earth this time. I saw the girl from my first dream. The one with red eyes and black hair.. But her hair was brown, not black, and her eyes were a mix of grey and green. John was with her. This girl had to be Lis.

They sat around a campfire, and not a word was said at first. John looked worried as he bit his lip.

"I'm confused," he said.

Lis got a weak smile playing on her red lips as she turned to him. They were now looking at each other.

"Don't be.. You'll get used to it," she said as she shook her head. "Just don't tell Edward..."

All of a sudden her focus went from John to me. She'd seen me.

*****

I wasn't sure how long I'd slept, but it couldn't be more than an hour. I looked at John's bed. He was gone - again.

Now I knew for sure that he was hiding something from me. But what exactly was he hiding? And did he trust Lis more than me?

So many questions, but no answers. If only John could be honest about it...

I got up and looked out the window. I knew it. He was going out with Lis. I could see them leaving the house.

Birthday surprise or not, this was creeping me out.

I ran downstairs, pulled my shoes on, and left the house. I was watching them from behind the whole way. They weren't holding hands, just talking.

"This is gonna be amazing," Lis said.

"Yeah... I still think it's wrong, though..."

"Don't you worry about that, in a short while you'll love this plan!"

"Yeah, I hope so..."

A plan? I had no idea what was going on, but I didn't like it. I didn't like how John had changed.

"Wait..." Lis said as she grabbed John's arm and stopped.

They stared at each other for a short while. It looked like a love scene in a movie. Just like a moment right before a kiss...

However, the kiss didn't happen. Lis turned to me, and so did John. I couldnt help smiling innocent at them, as if nothing happened.

"Edward..?" John said and walked towards me. "You were following us, weren't you?"

"Yeah, 'cause I had this crazy dream-"

"Just stop, okay. You always tell me about your dreams!"

My smile faded. He seemed almost... Angry.

"Don't you wanna know what's gonna happen in the future?" I asked carefully.

"You don't understand! Kevin can read minds, mum can teleport, you can dream the future, but what can I do?"

"You can make fires!" I smiled.

"Well so can Lis, but she's a shape shifter! I don't have any abilities, Edward! It's not fair!"

I spent the next few seconds thinking. Lis was a wizard. John didn't have a personal ability. John was yelling at me.

"John," I started. "You've never yelled at me like that before..."

It looked like he just realised something. Like he realised that he'd been yelling at me. He took a few steps back and looked down in shame.

"Sorry..." he said, and went back to Lis.

I watched them as they walked away from me, then I felt my heart drop.

What happened to 'no girl will ever come between us'? It sure looked alot like Lis were more important than me. He didn't even ask me to join.

He'd found someone else to hang with. Someone better than his own twin. He'd left me behind. I felt replaced, with my brain shouting 'don't leave me!'.

"Please let everything go back to normal," I whispered for myself, then headed back home.
