it was your first day at your new job.
you'd gotten through the first few hours with little to no trouble.
you looked at the VP's schedule, modified it and added to it as the day progressed. you didn't even see him that much because he was busy.
you followed him to a meeting, watching the life you thought was yours through the lens of an outsider. it pricked occasionally, but most of the time you were okay.
you had quickly learned a lot about tetsurou. and you'd also learned a lot from tetsurou.
the second part surprised you, because you wouldn't say it out loud but you did have a certain degree of superiority embedded into you. you were raised that way.
when you stepped out of the office with kuroo, he greeted everyone he saw by name. this included not just important executives but also the guy making copies at the printer and the intern that nervously gave him a report to look over.
he had very nice manners. his way of talking was playful and confident but also very humble and down to earth.
it appealed to people. you could see that everyone who spoke to him genuinely liked interacting with him.
the reason it impressed you was because it felt more like a skill you acquire than a nature that you already have.
and it was a skill that you did not possess. in your case, respect was a given. you knew your place and the people around you knew theirs. they'd treat you accordingly.
but with kuroo, the respect that his job commanded had to be earned. rapports had to be built from scratch and he'd done a good job at it.
"you don't know a single one of their names, do you?", tetsurou asked when you entered the elevator with him. he let you go in first like a gentleman.
you hadn't expected him to observe that, but you reciprocated his bluntness anyway.
"i know the board of directors and major division managers", you said, "no one else"
he nodded, a hint of a smile on his otherwise composed face. "try making friends around here, sakusa-san. people your age work here too you know."
the elevator doors opened and in walked a man you hadn't seen before. he had greyish green hair and freckles.
he greeted both you and kuroo respectfully.
"sakusa-san, we spoke over the phone yesterday", he reminded and you raised an eyebrow, "i'm tadashi yamaguchi. mayumi-san's new P.A."
you stared at him for a second and then nodded.
kuroo suddenly nudged you. here's your opportunity.
"i'm y/n sakusa, it's nice to meet you", your voice was animated as you held out your hand. his grip was surprisingly firm as he shook it.
"yes of course", he smiled before getting down to business, "i never did get a reply from you about mayumi-san's invitation"
kuroo looked at you quizzically. you discarded all your plans of befriending yamaguchi because he didn't know how to take a hint.
"i will be attending", you said, contradicting your original thoughts.
mostly because you wanted to observe everything firsthand and then bitch about it with shinsuke. but maybe also because you missed being home. you'd never lived outside home so long.
yamaguchi nodded, scrolling through his phone and opening a checklist. you reckoned that your mother was trying not to fire him, considering she'd just gotten exposed for wrongful termination.
